Two places you're forgetting are the Riverplace and also the boutique Marriott on SW Broadway. The Riverplace is expensive. The Marriott sometimes has deals. One night at the Benson with some kind of alarm going off in the hall all night, small room, and back of building noise outside the window was enough to convince me not to stay there. However, I always go for a drink in the lobby so I can listen to whatever jazz combo is playing.

Riverplace has huge cranes outside the door with a lot of construction going on.
So many places have garage doors that alarm every time a car goes through..
The Hotel Lucia looks nice as does the Paramount..

I don't get the comment above about 5th Avenue Suites "overcharging" for a suite. Our suite was huge, almost palatial, beautifully decorated, and the price was $152 a night. That's overcharging? I fully understand why it makes the "best value" lists. It was far better than I expected for the price.

The Riverplace is our favorite hotel in Portland. We stayed there in March under the POVA package and received a riverview room with breakfast and valet parking for $169/night. We have stayed there a couple of times before it was a Larkspur property.
The Benson is nice, we had lunch there this summer. Our favorite downtown hotel that we toured was the Heathman Hotel. Had great desserts out on the patio there. Came very close to staying here, but decided to go back to our cool, coastal weather. ***kim***

kimamom, with all due respect I think the poster was asking about a hotel to STAY in. Having lunch in a hotel has little to do with a recommendation for staying there in my opinion.
Riverplace can be fine if you don't mind lots of outside "drinking" noise as we experienced, you don't mind major construction around you, and you don't mind being quite a distance away from the "center of activity". It's hardly as "luxurious" as Fifth Avenue Suites or the Benson (I suspect from the pictures and ratings).

LOL, Kal, I know I only live here now, LOL, I can say that the Paramount is lovely, I walked into the lobby..
If anyone has been to Portland recently and been around the Riverwalk, they would know that there are 3 buildings being built, cranes, tons of construction.
Patrick,
Our King Suite on the top floor of the 5th Ave Suites was $135-
Did I tell you that Billy Idol stayed at the hotel when we were there? lol, we wondered why there were all these young women with punk hairdo's but wearing bridal veils

GASP. I guess Portland has already figured out our Ms. Scarlett deserves nothing but the best.
By the way, that certainly is the most dog friendly hotel I've ever seen, including the blackboard welcoming a pair of labs that seemed to be regulars. I bet they treated pup properly, too.

LOL, we get good rates because we stay so long!
Pup got his own little package when we checked in. A bag of treats from Urban Fauna, an amazing pet shop here. He got his own little stainless steel water bowl and a little " mat" to keep the floor clean..it is so nice, we are using it in the apt. They also gave us a list of dog parks in the area and where to shop for pup.
The Yankee and I got a bottle of Pinot Noir

Scarlett--Now, that bottle of Pinot Noir...we have to know, which winery is it, did you visit it, is it the ***best***, would you ***highly recommend*** it, and most importantly, where did you ***dine*** with it?
