What are your helpful hiking sights for Kauai and neighbor Islands?

I am really just looking for Kauai. If you know more web links for trails on Kauai let me know. Think others can benefit from other hiking links.

www.hawaiitrails.com is what I have found so far

Karen, My wife and I did the Awa'awapuhi Trail portion from the main road and back... maybe 6 miles?. Getting to the clifs was no problem and the views there were completely amazing. I still look at the pictures we took and have to say to myself "Those are full sized trees down there at the bottom, not little bushes"... it was so high up and so sheer and so beautiful. The hike back was all uphill and very tiring. So I guess it depends on the athleticism and attitude of the hikers in question. I had to rest a couple of times on the way back and sweated a couple of gallons it seemed like but of course it was well worth it.

Well, it isn't a website - but the book Kauai Revealed has good information on hikes. Also, when you are on Kauai you can go to the state parks dept. in town (near the airport) during the week and pick up a free map of all the trails on Kauai.

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook : Kauai Revealed (Ultimate Kauai Guidebook, 4th Ed) is a good book, very informative and descriptive for hikes. Also consider Kauai Trailblazer by Jerry and Janine Sprout.

Mostly Oahu trails (some of the best in the State!) but Professor Dale Turner is "The Man" of hiking write-ups, go to his page at

We just came back from Kauai and we did a hike and kayak tour in Princeville Ranches. That was really nice but since we had two small children we did not opt for the Na Pali tour (which I hear is great).

Karen: We did the first 1 1/2 miles of the Kalalau trail (the Napali cost trail that actually goes 11 miles) with a 5 year old and a 10 year old. Although the trail is steep, neither child had any problems. If your 9 year old is in good shape, he or she should be able to handle it. If there are complaints, promise a swim at Ke'e Beach at the trailhead. We also hiked in Koke'e State Park, although we found the trails there to be poorly marked. I had a lot of information from websites and guide books, but received the best information on Kauai trails by word of mouth from other tourists and locals.
