Kauai Hiking Trails Question
I will be in Kauai next month and have read some great things about the N'alolo Trail/Cliffs and Awa'awapuhi Grand Loop. It appears a long hike and I was wondering if the views are better than those seen from the viewpoits along the road, if so it would be worthwhile. Also I was wondering if anyone has done the Honopu Trail and if so how were the trail conditions and the views. If you've done both Nu'alolo loop and Honopu how do they compare? Thanks

The view from the Nualolo, etc. trail are far, far more amazing than anything you can see from the road. But it is a long hike and some on this board have found it to be a bit dicey in spots. The trail is narrow in places, with a scary drop off. But I still stay it is the best hike I have ever done.

I did the loop in May and would not recomnmend it to anyone. Read my trip report on this forum (4 parts) for the ddetails. My suggestion is you get the same bang for the buck by just going down Awa'awapuhi to the lookout and then back up. Easy going asent & descent; beautiful views and no danger!!!!! Plus you don't have to walk an extra 1.5 miles to get back to your car. <g>

Just back from Kauai and we did that loop. IT WAS AMAZING! We almost didn't go because we were afraid it might be too slippery but forged ahead and were rewarded with the most beautiful views. Annoying helicopters buzzing around but the did give perspective to some of the photos.
If you just do the Awa'awapuhi you'll be missing out.
Pack your water and snacks and enjoy!

We did the Nu'alolo/Cliffs/Awa'awapuhi Loop and agree that it is the most spectacular hike we have ever done.
There is an absolutely amazing view from Lolo Vista--be sure to go beyond the Cliffs trail crossing at the end of the Nu'alolo to get to Lolo Vista.
Check with the rangers for the conditon of the Cliffs---that is the scary part---parts of that trail are very narrow. Go on a clear, dry day.
The hike took us 6 hours but we have never hiked a trail with more "take your breath away" views.
