Waikiki Hotel Help

Our RCCL Hawaii cruise will let us out in Honolulu and we want to stay for 4 or 5 days to explore the island and relax. This will be in Mid May. No children involved and we are 50ish. Have read good and bad reviews on just about every hotel. Would like a 4 or 5 star hotel. Not too worried about the price if the location and amenities are right. Location on the beach would be nice but not a deal breaker. I know the Royal Hawaiian is closing in June for a major renovation. Hilton under construction in one tower.
I was in Hawaii 30 years ago so know the lay of the land but nothing else.
Any suggestions?

The Sheraton Waikiki might be a good choice for you. It's in a great location on the beach. I've stayed there several times and I really like it.

If I were in your situation (no kids, no particular budget, etc.) I'd consider the Halekulani.

The one I don't recommend is the Marriott. I've stayed there a number of times, and it seems to get worse every year.... The other two options mentioned sound good to me....

We seem to have a consensus here the Halekulani sounds like the clear choice. From the reviews I have read, it sounds like they don't have much of a beach, which doesn't really bother me, because the pool looks amazing!
Any recommendations on the room? Diamond Head view is the most expensive. Is it that much better? I am not really planning on spending the days in the room. Also if I book through Amex Platinum on their resort program I get a few perks, breakfast, one lunch, late check out, room upgrade (when available - which usually isn't!) etc.
Also what about restaurants, steak, seafood, Sushi, local fare? Any must go recommendations?

I like the New Otani down at the Kapiolani end of the beach. I'm not sure if it is considered a 4 or 5 star or not though.

But the Halekulani is definitely the fanciest & most expensive on Waikiki, that's true. Is is worth it?

I have stayed in a Diamond Head view room, and the view is gorgeous. It is like having Diamond Head at your front door. The room itself wasn't any larger than normal. Their restaurant La Mer is very upscale fine dining (advertised as Hawaii's only 5 diamond restaurant).

HHV will be OK. Even though there will be construction, it won't bother you. Ask for a room in a different tower.

Lots of info:

Don't rule out HHV. It is so big that you won't be bothered by construction. It has the best beach and multiple pools with lots of restaurant choices. If you want to go really upscale while you are there book in the Alli Tower. It has a private check in area, it's own pool and the rooms are amazing.

My husband and I stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki last year. We had a room on the 29th floor with views of Diamond Head. I found postcards with that same view. It was lovely. One of the highlights of the trip. The Halekulani is a beautiful hotel. I don't know what a room costs per night but if I could afford it, that would be my first choice, with the
Royal Hawaiin coming in second. Not certain how long that hotel will be closed. The only problem I could see with the Sheraton is that it is a convention hotel. There was a large convention when we were there which sometimes caused a little disruption.

Glad to see this. DD's soccer team is playing there in July for AYSO nationals and we will be staying at HHV. Just heard about the construction today, so it is interesting to read about it here and learn it shouldn't be an issue.

The "parc's" rooms look very modern. I think its pretty cool you can rent a room and a Racing car. photos: http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll...&eapid=21187-1
