US Open Memories

30 years ago when the Open was at the Forest Hills Stadium, I would go the opening 2 days and watch all the warm-ups and matches on the back courts. A very young Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, Ken Roswall, Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Ilie Nastasie, Bjorn Borg, Roscoe Tanner (met him on the subway one year) and my favorite, John Newcombe. Now those were players! The cost of the tickets then were pennies compared to today's. And they were easily accessible. Not like today's......too corporate.

For me, it was a quarterfinal match between Jimmy Connors and Paul Haarhaus in 1991. Connors made an incredible comeback to win what I believe was his final victory ever at the US Open. As Connors turned the match around, the entire audience of 20,000+ erupted like I have never seen at any sporting event
