Marcia, you and your family can eat pretty inexpensively at Korean delis that have separate seating. There's one on 51st Street & 3rd Avenue that's pretty good. They have a large salad bar and everything else you can think of. They charge by the pound for salad so try to be careful with heavy foods like potato salad and pasta.
Many of the suggestions you've already received are very good. Most Chinese restaurants offer a lunch deal. Little India on East 6th Street is very cheap and the other Little India, also known as Curry Hill, on Lexington Avenue from around 25th Street through 31st Street is very reasonable. Many Chinese, Japanese and Thai restaurants offer huge bowls of soup with noodles and other goodies and are cheap. Best of all, you'll also be exploring New York neighborhoods and taking in our fine city.
Have fun.
