Travel Inn New York City, Feedback Needed
Hello
Someone had mentioned this hotel to me when responding to one of my questions and I would like more information please. I called them and they are in the $150 per night category, free parking and huge outdoor pool. Sounds great for a family of 4 (kids 6 and 3). So whats the catch?
Please advise on the location as well.
Thank you.

We’ve stayed there three times, it’s a small hotel double/double rooms, small bathrooms and closet. Clean rooms, reasonably basic, some with a view of the Empire State Building.
The pool has limited opening hours; it closed at the strange time of 6:50 if I remember correctly.
No refreshments in the rooms but Room service from the Deli next door – which is also good for Breakfast. The hotel is a few blocks from Times Square, for us a 10 minute walk but in a much quieter neighborhood, and opposite a police station.
Anything else you’d like to know?

There really is no catch. This is more a motor inn style place. The rooms have been recently redecorated and the decor is quite nice (by hotel standards). The pool is well maintained and very nice. There's no huge lobby, no fancy restaurant or bar within. There's limited "concierge" service, of a sort, at the tiny newstand off the lobby.
As I mentioned previously, it is a few long blocks from Times Square. But Bus #42 runs crosstown with a stops close to the entrance.
There are many restaurants nearby, 9th avenue is lined with restaurants of all sorts.

The only "catch" is that this is quite a basic hotel in a fairly inconvenient location. When you walk out the door it is a good 10 minute walk - more with small kids - to the subway - or you have to take the crosstown bus.
It's not like being located right in the center of things (wherever your center may be - Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Central Park, downtown trendy shopping, etc) so you really need to travel to get to anything.
The neighborhood is perfectly safe - just not especially attractive.

As others mentiond it is a basic budget hotel. No amenities. it is on 42nd ST. between 10th and 11th Avenues. The distance to Times Square is just under 1/2 mile. There a bus stop across the street which will take you to the subway in Times Square. If you have a Metro Card the transfer from Bus to Subway, or vice versa, is free.
