Travel Inn Hotel in Manhattan

This was discussed briefly in a recent post - it gets mostly negative reviews in online forums and looks from the outsied to be an old SRO (single room occupant) hotel that was updated. It's next to a big adult store/peep show. Look for something else!

OOOOPS!!! I was thinking of New York Inn on 8th Ave. The Travel Inn is in a weird location that I'd feel a bit uncomfortable walking there late at night. It always looked a bit odd to me because of location but someone in this forum stayed there for the night before their cruise left (it's near the piers) and said it was a good deal for the money - actually very clean and acceptable budget accomodations. It's a bit of a haul on foot to Times Square and to the closest subway stop - the location is less convenient than it might seem to be but for the right price might be worth investigating.

Owen is right. It has decent budget rooms (I know a businessman that has stayed there a few times), but is a long walk and can be a bit deserted late at night. I personally don't think any harm would come to you walking through there late at night, but it's according to what you are comfortable with.

Actually we stayed there and Owen's description of the New York Inn on 8th Ave. may as well be applied to the Travel Inn. It was the most dissapointing place and I think because it is popular with high school kids on trips to NYC we did not sleep most of the night because of the noise. We had a feeling we were staying in some sleezy motel where they rent rooms by the hour.
Two posistive things about our stay there.
1. We had a terrific time in Manhattan (I don't think this has anything to do with this hotel).
2. We saved money by staying there.
However, my husband and I concluded that we rather pay twice more for accommodation than stay in this place again.

Sally, location stinks. You'll be one block from the highway. Even though the Times Square area has been "Disneyfied" there's still lots of transients. There are too many other hotels. Call Quikbook at 1-800-789-9887 and see what they come up with.

The best deals going for NYC hotels (IMO) can be found via Priceline, with 3* and 4* hotels often going for <$100/nite. Sure, the negative is that you don't know the hotel beforehand, but for <$100/nite in NYC, how bad can it be (IF sticking with higher rated hotels ie-4* or 3*).
Of course, check out biddingfortravel.com for prior experiences and winning bids.

I agree, Priceline is the way to go. If you're not confident about thqat, try the Best Western MIDTOWN or any of the other Apple Core hotels. They're all recently-renovated economical places. I found that hte Best Western midtown was a vey good value, great location (one block east of the hustle of Times Square, quiet block) capable staff, decent continental breakfast, etc.
