I am always absolutely amazed when Smathers Beach in Key West makes this list. It is an extremely narrow (we're talking 20 feet from water to street) piece of coral rock with a thin covering of sand that's usually full of ants, noise from the airport behind you, gas fumes from the cars driving by, and pretty dirty water. It makes South Beach look like the Garden of Eden!

What a stupid list. First of all, what is "Sanibel Beach"? Which of the many beaches there are they talking about, each has its own character. Why would Clearwater Beach be better than the wider, softer Treasure Island Beach almost next door? And Smathers Beach? That is the biggest joke of all.
What are these supposed to represent? Simply the quality of the beach itself for sunbathing and swimming? Or are the nearest town and local amenities supposed to have a part in this choosing? In any case it all looks pretty dumb to me.

Well, that's certainly true. There is no "Sanibel Beach"-(and you can't even see the beach anyway in Sanibel from Periwinkle). And Lovers Key beach? Who goes there?-although as I said, if you move up the beach some, I would agree that Ft. Myers Beach around Gull Wing is one of the top beaches in Fla.
