We're going to a Yankees game on April 30 and I'm not at all familiar with the area around Yankee Stadium (in fact, it occurs to me that I don't even know where YS is!)

I have two questions:
If we're staying around 50th and 7th, what's the best way for us to get to the stadium, especially considering that it will be rush hour? And the best way to get home after the game?

And are there any places around YS that you'd recommend for a casual dinner before the game.

Take the D train from 6th AV and 50th St to and from Yankee Stadium. There will be tons of Yankee fans on the train travelling to and from the game.

The area around Yankee is pretty horrible. I can't think of anywhere in that area where you'd want to eat.

Train info sounds, great, thanks. Is there decent ballgame food in the stadium? We only have McDonald's outlets in ours. Ugh.

Weekday games usually start at 7:05, so getting something to eat in Manhattan before you go is on the early side.

Despite the cost, I consider dinner at the Stadium to be part of the package. A couple of hot dogs, peanuts, and a beer or soda.

The Stadium is in the Bronx, right near the Harlem river, just north of Manhattan at roughly 158th St. (think "the Bronx is up but the Battery's down").

I would not characterize the food at Yankee Stadium as great - it's high $ concession stand fare. There is the Stadium Club restaurant at YS, but I believe they are members only.

I will give it a shot: I guess you will not have a car, and that would not be an issue for the stadium.

Eat in Manhattan! The stadium is not the place to walk around looking for a good resturant. Nothing wrong, just a lot of Bars and Fast food (anyone know of anything in the area?)

Take the D-Train "uptown" to the Bronx. Stadium is on 161st street in the Bronx. ASK the Folks at the HOTEL for the best option I think there is a subway entrance right next to your hotel on 50th and 7th avenue. Very convenient!!

There will be MANY Yankee fans doing the exact thing. Follow the Yankee Hats!! ( well maybe that might not be a good idea in that every tourist in NYC seems to have a Yankee hat

I would have thought there'd be some good eats around the stadium but I think we'll make do with a late lunch in Manhattan and good junk food like peanuts and ice cream at the game.

I remember they had sort of a food court thing with Chinese food--not my idea of ballpark fare. Otherwise just the usual hot dogs, peanuts, beer, etc. This is a beautiful, historic, venerable ballpark, and I have a treasured memory of Matsui hitting a walk-off homerun in the 9th against Cleveland and everybody exiting onto the train singing "New York, New York" at the top of their lungs, and I'm certainly not a Yankee fan!

YAY! I'm getting so excited! We've got such great plans in place for our NY week!

The stadium usually sells out and since security is so tight (you can;t bring anything larger than a handbag and they will examine that) you really need to get there early to find your way to your seats.

The Stadium has a whole variety of food - all of it fairly awful. I suggest having a nice, late, lunch and then just grabbing whatever you can bear there.

(There are a couple of sports bars - have never tried any - in the immediate vicinity. You don;t want to go further away from the Stadium than the first block or two.)

The Plan:
late lunch in town
train to the stadium (and get there early)
baseball, beer, peanuts, ice cream
cheer, yell 'GOOD EYE!' whenever possible, get excited
train home

We always cheer for the team of the town we're visiting for two reasons:

1. we're the guests, and
b. you don't get beat up that way.

To me, the food at the Stadium is all part of the experience! Another way to get there is to take the ferry. Port Imperiale has a ferry that goes to Yankee Stadium and is a much more civilized way to go. It starts in Weehawken, but picks up passengers at the South Street Seaport and one other location, I believe.

If at 50th & 7th, the subway is the best way. To get there, I suggest you take the 4 train from either Grand Central or 59th and Lex. While the West Side trains are easier from 50 & 7th, part of the joy of going to Yankee Stadium is seeing the Stadium as you come out of the subway tunnel.

When you leave, stick to the west side trains. Take the B or D to the 7th Avenue Station in Manhattan as that'll drop you at 7th and 53rd.

goddesstogo, the #4 Train is one of the 'underground' subway trains that take some of its journey 'Above Ground' That would be a nice touch to see that great Stadium from 'up high'

I use to take the #4 back in the Mickey Mantle Days when I was a snot nosed kid playing sandlot ball in the Bronx!

Good point about the above ground train. It's always my preference to use above ground public transportation since I like to see where I'm going.

I guess it will depend on whether we're starting out from the apartment or somewhere else.

I'm just going to print the pertinent info off this thread and carry it with me so we can make a last minute decision.
