blep, not sure about either of these (did you check tripadvisor.com & here?) but I remember people saying good things on this board about the Midtown Comfort Inn on 46th between 5th & 6th which I think is part of this same group (applecorehotels.com). Good location etc. DON'T consider any other Comfort Inn though. Is the $116 for a room for 2 or 4?

Nytraveler: We will be getting 2 rooms, at $116 per room. On a map La Quinta looks about a mile south of Times Square, Super 8 looks to be only about 2 blocks from TS. Knowing this, which would be a better location overall?

I stayed at Super 8 twice last year. It is indeed basic, and I probably wouldn't choose it if I was the kind of person who stays in the hotel much. However, I am as far removed from that person as possible, so it works for me. The location for the money is great, and the hotel is just fine.

The La Quinta is listed at 17w 32 st - 10 blocks south of Times Square. This is primarily a modest business neighborhood - very quiet at night - although Macy's is at 34/Broadway. I don't know if you would prefer Times Square - it's incredibly loud, bright and very tacky - the last place I would ever stay but I know a lot of tourists seem to love being in the middle of it.

Just to add to your dilemma, have you looked at the Red Roof on 32nd St.? I'm sure when you are traveling, but rates seem to range from $99 - $119 for a double room with (basic) breakfast. I have heard that the hotel is fairly new, very clean and offer non-smoking rooms. Here is the website: http://www.redroof.com/reservations/...?innNumber=605
Would you consider using Priceline?

Have you tried Quikbook.com for your dates? You do not say when you will be visiting NYC, but at the moment, The Roosevelt is available for $124 on Quikbook.
Weekends, holiday weeks, midweek days, and "seasons" can all have different price structures.

Never stayed at La Quinta, but I have heard good things abut it. Here's a link to some reviews from tripadvisor.com

Thanks for MOST of the replies. Sorry to keep asking questions, but we haven't been to NYC before so I'd just like to be sure I have a decent hotel in a good location.
Quickbook prices look good, except most of the low prices are for one bed. We will need 2 beds in each room.

Times Square is noisy, but the street in front of Super 8 is not. It is actually right below Rockefeller Center and a couple of blocks off of Times Square. I have never had trouble with noise on previous stays, and I have slept for about 10 nights there total. I can understand why some people don't get sleeping around Times Square, but it does have its pluses.
