Summer camp in Portland,Oregon

My ten-year-old son and I are planning to take a three- week trip to Portland, Oregon. My son would like to join a day camp there. Is there any way for us to find a safe and healthy summer camp to attend in July ?

Try calling your local boy scout office or YMCA. they should be able to refer you to camps in Portland.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) as well as the Metro Washington Park Zoo both offer outstanding day camps all summer. I'm sure they both have web sites with info. You might also check with Oregonlive which is the site for the Oregonian newspaper. They just ran a suppliment about camps.

Good ideas above.
Also, for sports camps, I highly recomment Skyhawks. Check out their web site at skyhawks.com. They have day camps in many sports (basketball, flag football, soccer, hockey, tennis etc.) in several locations, usually at schools. These are by age group and run from about 9AM to 3PM. They hire college kids to help, based on the numbers, so always seem to have room. And they are reasonably priced. Our son (age 12) has participated almost yearly and has consistently enjoyed these camps.

Also, Portland Park District will have week long day camps. We live in the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD) and they, too, have day camp programs. (THPRD is west of Portland, in Washington County mostly.) Some of these park district day camps will get kids who go every week, so they might be harder to meet kids in. I'd check on that. The Park Districts also offer some fun day trips, like fishing at a trout farm, or visiting a wave pool.

The Jewish Community Center also has day camps.

There are lots of choices. Check on the internet at the web sites for these organizations.

If you get the info and don't know what you will be nearby, post again and let us know where you'll be staying and we'll try to help you, if we can. Also, if there is an "odd" sport of interest (like ice skating), we can give you ideas of where to look.

Dear friends,
I am very grateful to you for all the help you have given us.
Actually, I haven't been to America for about fifteen years. It will be my son's first trip to your lovely country.I'm sure we'll enjoy our stay in Portland. Sincerely Helena
