Hi, am traveling to Porland for a 2 night stay in Portland mid-July. We (family of 4) would like to do touristy activities of Washington Park and Waterfront (we're open to suggestions). Is is best to stay downtown or is there a fringe area that may be less expensive but still easily accessible? I understand Portland has a great light rail system. Thank you!

Don't feel fully qualified to answer this but since no one else has I'll try. (we live close enough to do day trips) and it may be too late. First I would probably recommend the Embassy Suites downtown. It is in a wonderful old building that they renovated. It is good for families, the food is always nice. I don't know about price. It is in a great location can walk or ride MAX (the light rail system).

I have stayed at the Marriot - great location and ask for a river view it is prettier.

There are lots of bed and breakfasts near Washington Park that are fun but you would probably need a car.

MAX does go to the Oregon Zoo and then buses leave from there to go to other area of Washington Park.

The Riverplace Hotel is wonderful. It can be pricey but I'd check it out anyway since we got a decent rate our last visit.

Also look into the Silver Cloud just off NW 23rd. The hotel is less expensive than downtown hotels, offers some family friend services (free washers and dryers, but you'll only be there two nights) and is located just a block or two from the whole NW 23rd and NWst steets area--one of the best, most desirable neighborhoods in town. Plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants, great houses, parks, and you're fairly close to Washington Park.
As you stroll from the hotel up to 23rd and Burnside, ask your kids (if they're old enough) to see how many streets have the same names as Simpsons characters (creator Matt Groening is from that part of Portland and many character names are drawn from Portland streets--Lovejoy, Terwilliger [Sideshow Bob], Flanders, etc.)

If you're looking for value, try the Mark Spencer which is down town has free parking and (believe it or not) a kitchen. They have an internet special. It is very convenient to be down town. Take the kids to nearby 21st and 23rd Street (ask at the desk). If you're into books, the world's largest bookstore is nearby. Portland has a very good zoo, science center, and art museum.
