Stowe, VT -- Green Mountain Inn vs. Golden Eagle

Any feedback on which of the above inns in Stowe, VT would be better for my husband, 15 year-old teenage son and me in July? We're looking for something within walking distance of town, with nice accomodations and a pool. Thanks for any input.

I wouldnt call the Golden Eagle an "inn", it's more of a resort type place. It's up Mountain Road a bit as well-my guess is that it's a 1/2 a mile or so to town. The Green Mountain Inn is right in "downtown" Stowe. Keep in mind that most of the restaurants/bars/shops are on Mountain Road. Be sure to utilize Stowe's Recreation Path. If you don't have your own, you can rent bikes or inline skates at some of the ski & bike shops in town. Also, be sure to hike/drive/take the gondola (you'll have to hike a little further to the summit from the top of the gondola) to the top of Mount Mansfield for great views. The drive through Smuggler's Notch is fun as well. Have a great time!

Laura - the Golden Eagle is a nice place to stay and is reasonable. The pools (indoor and outdoor) are nice though small. The rooms are very clean and nicely decorated. The prior poster is correct that it is not an "inn" but more like a motor hotel - nicer than a motel. It is also located across the street from the Recreation Path and a really good pizza place. We would not hesitate to stay again given its price. Not sure you would consider it walking distance to town but there are lots of restaurants nearby.

Stayed at the Golden Eagle last fall. As bm said, it is more of a resort type property. Had a very nice room with a terrace and a working fireplace (probably wouldn't need that in July), they serve afternoon tea, and there are nature trails in the woods on the property. I think they serve breakfast and as the previous poster mentioned, there are restaurants nearby. Easy walk to town (I'm 60)--it always seems long when your riding. Enjoy!

I've stayed at the green mountain inn many times as it is sort of a romantic getaway for my fiance and I. We've enjoyed the rather luxurious accomadations every time. They do have a pool and a small fitness club as well as one of the better restaurants in town. There's a trolley stop right outside the front door which can take you all over town and so getting around shouldn't be a problem. Though if you want to venture outside of Stowe, and I recommend that you do, you'll need a car. All in all it's a very quaint inn in a very quaint New England town. Check out the Mill House and Club House for beautiful rooms with fireplaces and jacuzzi tubs. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
