Spring Break Grand Canyon

We live in Salt Lake and have never been to the Grand Canyon. We are considering a trip to the South Rim over spring break the end of April. Kids ages 13, 7 and 7 - all boys. Help me plan our trip - route, suggested stops, etc. We have been to Zions and Bryce before. We have relatives in Veags so would like to stop there on the way to or from. We have 7 days. Thanks

First, search this site for "Grand Canyon", and you'll find lots of posts.

Mapquest shows the trip will take around 12 hours so plan accordingly. Mapquest also suggests going through Page, AZ, so I'll tell you about our trip (no kids) in April of this year. I would give the Grand Canyon as much time as possible, but we found the following sites interesting as well:

Glen Canyon Dam near Page, AZ
Antelope Canyon near Page, AZ
Dinosaur Tracks near Tuba, AZ
Camron Trading Post on Navajo Reservation
Wupatki Pueblo
Walnet Canyon Cliff Dwellings near Flagstaff.

Your sons might be interested in staying at the Cameron Trading Post since it is on the Navajo Reservation. It is also only a hours drive to the east entrance (fewer crowds) to the Grand Canyon.

Let me know if you have questions. Some of my pictures are at:

Mike - thanks for sharing the pictures. I was particularly impressed with the pictures of Antelope Canyon. Where did you stay in Page?

I have read the Grand Canyon posts, but most people were not coming from Salt Lake and I was hoping for suggestions on how to split up the long drive.

I made reservations at the Yavapai Lodge for two nights - the only place available in the park. It got mixed reviews, but I'm sure it will meet our needs.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

We didn't stay in Page. There seemed to be the normal mix of Comfort Inns, etc. in Page though. Our route was:

- Las Vegas to Williams
- Williams to Cameron
- Cameron to the Grand Canyon
- Cameron to Zion
- Zion to Las Vegas.

It was my first trip to the Grand Canyon as well, so I don't have other advice. We enjoyed the easy hiking along the rim, sunrise and sunset were incredible,
and Antelope Canyon was like being in church.

Thanks for the kind words about my Antelope Canyon pictures, but as I've mentioned in other posts, I didn't have the right equipment (tripod) to take great pictures of the canyon (it was even prettier).

Have fun, and don't forget to search this site for trip reports from other people who went to the Grand Canyon.

Mike
