Snorkeling on Kauai

I've only been snorkeling once and it was many years ago, my husband has never been and he doesn't like the water and is not a strong swimmer. I thought instead of going into deeper water on a boat we could snorkel off a beach in shallow water. Do people do that? What beaches on Kauai are good for that? My hubby might be more comfortable if its just the 2 of us and not a group and we can just wade out into the water. Thanks.

Yes, no problem in several areas. Poipu Beach should fill the bill for shallow water, and several places nearby rent equipment. Lygate Park is another place where the water is shallow. Families bring children there. I remember Anini Beach as being fairly easy to enter the water but I don't remember seeing many spectacular fish there. The fish were more plentiful in Poipu when we were there.

Yes, nice snorkeling areas right off the beach at Poipu State Park. In addition to the fish, at the right time of year you'll be able to se baby turtles.

We snorkelled at Poipu Beach last week and had a 5 year old snorkeling with us. Saw lots of fish and 4 green turtles bigger than us swam past us. Fabulous. Hired from shop near beach except 5 year old had her own .2 of us wore water shoes as it's quite rocky but others didn't .

If you're on the North Shore, Sealodge Beach is very shallow and typically has turtles and good snorkeling in the summer. But...it's a somewhat steep walk down the path to get there and you have to amble over a few rocks. I don't do it if it's slippery.

Tunnels has good snorkeling in the summer when it is calm, but parking is always a problem there, many folks park at Haena and walk down. Anini Beach is also good, as is Poipu. A lot of it depends upon time of year also.
The snorkeling on Kauai is generally better from shore, however I would still do a tour of the Na Pali coast by boat, the scenery is drop dead gorgeous. You do not have to snorkel at all, they just make a short stop so people can get in the water if they want while the crew gets lunch ready.

Nice little stretch of beach right outside The Beach House on the road to Spouting Horn. Need to get there early to grab some sand, tho.

Salt Pond not too bad either. A lot of families.
Anahola, too but be respectful of the locals.
