San Francisco Weather

We are going to be in San Francisco as of Feb 28. I am so undecided on what to pack. I noticed that it will be raining all week

Any suggestions? Do I need a coat, boots ...

Thank You

As a former northern California denizen, the rule for San Francisco is "Always carry a sweater. You may need a coat, and sometimes an umbrella. Even in the summer."

I was listening to the local San Francisco news and then I looked up the weather network and it said 90% rain on Thursday and Friday (in a week). So what should I pack?

The weather.com forecast for next Thursday is overcast with rain showers at times (50% chance), temps in the low 50s. I'd bring a fleece or down jacket and a rain jacket.

90% rain doesn't mean that it will rain 90% of the time, it means that there is a 90% chance that there will be some rain during the day. Our normal pattern when storms come in is intermittent rain for a couple days, then dry weather followed by more intermittent rain for a few days.

As for what to pack - a rain coat and an umbrella, shoes that you can walk in in the rain - plus whatever you would normally wear for the temperatures.

i looked it up and an seeing only 20% precip on the 28th, 70%, 40%, 60% and so on. That does NOT mean it will be "raining all week".

Pack layers, with the outer one being water resistant. A travel umbrella (or buy one if you need it). Shoes or boots that won't get soaked and with a good sole so you won't slip.

Every forecast I've seen (4 different sites) say 'showers' - not 'rain'. That is an actual distinction. Rain means rain, showers means more light and/or intermittent showers.

So, I was looking at the weather again since we are leaving tonight and it sure doesn't look good. Looks like rain and thunderstorms all the way. Are you getting the same info there?

We planned to go into The City tonight for a Victorian Alliance meeting at 7PM at the Haas-Lilenthal house, and then pizza afterwards at Haystack Pizza on 24th St in the Noe Valley (we lived nearby for 7 years in the late 70s). The rain forecast at 5PM said 97% chance of rain starting at 8PM & lasting for several hours. So we cancelled our plans, and instead had burgers & watched the Warriors game at home. It is now 9:30pm and where we live (near SFO), there is no rain - only light mist - similar to the typical August fog mist. The forecast now says that there is a 97% chance of rain between 3am & 5am tonight. The heavy rain that was forecast for 98% mid-day tomorrow, is now down to 48-17% mid day.

Layers. A raincoat is a great suggestion. I've always found when visiting the City, the forecast is a rough estimate. Be prepared for sun, rain, and/or wind no matter what the forecast says!

Yesterday we had plenty of sunshine mid-day, and only a little morning rain and some heavier stuff in the evening. The Chron called the rainstorm in the Bay Area "a dud".

Whereas this morning coming back into SF from an appointment in Berkeley, I experienced sun, rain showers, HAIL, rain showers, and partial sun all in the span of 30 minutes. And yesterday it rained almost non stop in Carmel. Micro climates in action.

I live in the Sierras @ 3500 ft. Yesterday, we had rain, sleet and snow. Today, I woke up to a foot of snow and beautiful blue skies. By 10am, the skies were dark gray, and it was snowing again. It is now just after noon, and it's sunny with blue skies. Mother Nature is certainly off her meds.

an umbrella! It is winter and it does get cold, not Wisconsin cold but in the 40's during day and 30's at night.
