The downtown Motel 6 is actually pretty decent. Not that I stay in Motel 6 a lot, but it was easily the nicest one I've ever stayed in. Pretty easy freeway access and pretty sure they had free parking but you should call to verify. Seems to me they did but the website says nothing about it.

WhereAreWe.....I made the reservation at MOtel 6 downtown. Perfect for staying five nights. Total was like 300.00 and there is NO parking fees! I do not understand all of the hotels, even with regular parking lots, having fees in San Diego.
This Motel 6 has been upgraded with the IKEA looking furniture. I've stayed at the remodeled ones here in Dallas and it was very clean and cheap. The Motel 6 is a great option if it's been recently remodeled.
I went on Priceline and done bidding for San Diego and they wouldn't accept any offer I had. My offer was not too low according to recent sales..higher actually.

I think that is a fairly safe and nice part of town. It is not in the Gaslamp or more popular tourist areas, it is more of a business area. It is close to the Little Italy area. You can walk around at night and check out the various Italian restaurants.

In that case I can recommend these two on India Street (which is the heart of Little Italy)

Indio is more fusion food but is very good and has a lively scene.
Both are popular and can get crowded so make reservations if you think you might be interested.

Oh and Burger Lounge (if you like burgers and fries) which has a twist in that the food is organic and you have veggie and chicken burger choices as well. It is also on India Street.

BestHotelsUnder100.com has a San Diego page with some great value choices in San Diego.

It lists one of my favorite hotels in San Diego. Check out the Sofia Hotel info for a good hotel value in the Gas Lamp district of San Diego. Excellent location if you want to be close to the nightlife in downtown.

tenthumbs: nanabee's recommendation was for a pre-paid internet rate TWO years ago. Probably not that much help for Mar 2013.
For some reason NOPsites decided to top the thread to flog that site - looks suspiciously like advertising but NOP has been around for a while so maybe not.
(NOPsites: it is best to check thread dates before topping them)
