San Diego hotels under $100?

Coming to San Diego March 17-24 and looking for a hotel that is less than $100 a night. I have AAA and Government discount, but everything seems way too high. Also looking for free parking if possible. I usually stay at Marriotts and Hampton's for less than $100, but can't seem to find anything. Just looking for clean property as we will be there to mainly shower and sleep. Will be out and about during the day and will have rental car. Would like a hotel with a view if possible, but it's not a requirement!

Any help??

Priceline might be a good solution for you

I think that's an extremely low budget for San diego - certainly for anything with a view. Even with corporate rates I never got any price near that at the hotels overlooking the sea.

Have you looked at bidding on Priceline?

there are a bunch of lower cost chain hotels near Hotel Circle - but the area is not very convenient and definitely side of the highway.

I will look at Priceline. Just basically looking for a clean place to sleep and shower. Not really caring about the amenities or anything.

Try looking on http://www.sandiego.org the official tourist information site for San Diego. This is a great place to begin your search for a hotel and other very helpful information. Request one of their free information brochures.

You might have a look at http://www.innatsunsetcliffs.com their very smallest pool side room may meet your needs but their rate is a little more than $100. Free parking. Reviews on http://www.tripadvisor.com Fantastic views.

Enjoy beautiful San Diego.

There are MANY hotels in Misson Valley which advertise rooms under $100. Check with AAA. Most are chain hotels, clean, simple, and have good freeway access.

"I will look at Priceline."

'Looking' at priceline won't help you -- you need to bid on the "name your own price" feature. Don't (ever) book a hotel thru the straight reservation side of Priceline.

"I usually stay at Marriotts and Hampton's for less than $100, but can't seem to find anything. . . . Would like a hotel with a view if possible,"

That's like saying I can stay in a Hilton in Sacramento for $105, how come the one in London is $390?

You can find LOTS of Marriotts in LOTS of places for under $100. But not in places like San Diego, San Francisco and other major destinations.

You can get many of the highway-side tourist chains for $100 or less.

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trave...ission-valley/

san diego mission valley's marriott does have an $89/night
reservation for those dates.

good news: has city views, living & sitting area with 325 sq. ft, coffee maker.

bad news: advance purchase rate, pre-paid, no refunds, no changes

you just have to call around because there are definately many nice places available in your price range for that time of year.

For those dates, Hawthorn Suites at Hotel Circle South is your best bet. You could also consider Best Western Seven Seas and Days Inn 543 Hotel Circle.

There are 3 hostels that I would consider. They are all less than $30/night. The 2 that are oceanside are California Dreams Backpackers at 747 Emerald Street 858 246-7101 and
Ocean Beach at 4961 Newport Ave. 1 800 339-7263.
The Hostel International Downtown is at 521 Market St.
I enjoy cooking for myself in their kitchens instead of eating out in restaurants all the time.

Okay, I see that you do not need a view or to be near the beach. Go to Expedia (or something similar), enter your dates, select 3-star and above and sort by price.

I see several with guest ratings 4+ including major chains such as Doubletree, Crowne Plaza. You may need to prepay to get this low rate, however.

You'll be in San Diego for business (noted your government discount)... what area and then it will be easier to make suggestions.

tom fuller: Are your personally familiar with the hostels in San Diego? The Ocean Beach Hostel (from what I observed many years ago - it may have changed) is pretty raunchy. It's definately for the alternative, young, hippy set.

Oceanside can also be a tough area, depending on what part of town and it is about an hours drive from downtown San Diego.

Also Market Street area can also be pretty iffy. The address sounds like it might be ok, but that part of town also may have a large homeless population.

Otherwise, hostels are a great idea and often overlooked.

I must admit I have never been to SD. I have been in many HI hostels and they have been good. One of the Backpackers hostels was pretty bad (in Toronto). Whenever I spend the night in Sacramento, I stay at the HI Hostel at 10th & H.
You might get lucky with a low bid on Priceline for the section of the city that you want to be in.

Tom - it is generally not the best idea to recommend places you've never been . . .

When I said "I'll look at Priceline" I guess I should have said that I will compare the areas to the hotels on biddingfortravel.com to get an idea of the star ratings and hotels in that area.

I will not be in San Diego on business. I have the Government ID for discounts and such and usually use that or AAA when it comes to checking in hotels. Never had a problem.

I will definitely look at these hotels and hostels. Thanks.

" I have the Government ID for discounts"

One thing to note -- in California, some hotels do require more than just a government ID to get the gov't rate. There are more than 200,000 CA State employees - and that isn't counting all the Feds, County, City, Special District, and school employees and all the people w/ IDs visting from other states. So while some hotels just ask for an ID -- many require some proof you are on actual gov't business -- otherwise there'd be millions folks asking for the discounts.

Whether a hotel requires just valid govt id or that you must be on official govt business should be stated in the govt rate description when you are booking the room.

I agree, tom42! If there are additional requests it usually always states it before the reservation is made. I have seen a few packages in which the orders are requested as well or requesting that I pay with a govt credit card. Funny thing is that usually the govt rate is higher b/c of the per diem rate so I just use AAA. In more less populated areas, where the rate is cheaper, I can get some good deals though.
