San Diego hotel help

The folks on the New York board were invaluable in planning our recent trip to New York, so I know you all will come to the rescue for this one. We are planning a mini-family reunion in San Diego in July. I haven't been to San Diego in quite a while, probably 10 + years. We have a variety of ages from 12 to late 50's. Looking for a hotel preferably near or on the beach, nice, but doesn't have to be fancy, but also won't break the bank. Is that even possible in the summer in San Diego? If it's not - do you have any other ideas for hotels in the area? If it's not on the beach, it should have a pool for the kids. Thanks for your help!

check the Holiday Inn Bayside. It's not on the beach, but has poolside games, a pitch-putt golf area, bicycle rentals, airport shuttle, and for the adults, a happy hour.

There have been a lot of recent posts on SD hotels, so definitely do a search. We just came back from a short trip to SD so here are my 2 cents: after getting good advice on this board, we (family of 4 - kids 7&9 )decided on the Ocean Park Inn. It's a smaller property (about 75 rooms)right on Pacific Beach, all rooms have balconies, fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers and in-room safes. Continental breakfast is included as is gated underground parking (hard to come by at the beach). Wonderful location near many fun restaurants. It was great being able to go to sleep, listening to the sound of the ocean out your balcony door. They have a small pool and jacuzzi, but they're nothing to write home about. The staff is pleasant and helpful and they have free coffee and fruit juices all day in the breakfast area. We booked our room through the SD visitors and convention bureau (www.sandiego.org) and got a super rate. Hope this helps!

Agree 100% with karenvk - The Ocean Park Inn www.oceanparkinn.com
Excellent value for your $$. We have stayed there and will do so again.

The Ocean Park Inn is in an excellent location and is reasonably priced. I would also recommend checking the Catamaran, which is right on the bay and just across the street from the beach - beautiful Hawaiin style grounds and much more lush than the Ocean Park - but it is likely to come with a higher price tag.
