San Diego Hostels

Has anyone ever stayed at a hostel in the US? Specifically in San Diego? My son (18 y.o.) will be traveling to ComicCon with some buddies and all the hotels near the convention center are booked and a bit pricey. They won't be old enough to rent a car so I wanted them to be close by and found a couple of hostels with beds available in the area. It's sounds like the perfect place for a few teenage boys to be staying but I just wanted to know if anyone had any additional info or words of wisdom.

I don't know anything about the hostels specifically. I found a web site that rates them, but I have no idea how accurate the ratings are-and you've probably already seen it.

What I did notice is that they offer trips to Tijuana. 18 year olds go to TJ to drink, and it's not a safe place for them. Please warn your son not to go.

Thank you Barbara, yes, I will warn him to watch out for that. Some of them also offer Pub Crawls, fortunately, he wants to be a cop and he's pretty good about making good decisions. Thanks for the link also!

If it's a Hostelling International hostel, it should be fine.

I've stayed in hostels in the SF area and had no trouble. Check out hostelworld.com you can read reviews about the hostels from costomers who have stayed there. I book all of my hostels with them.

Agree completely with Elendilpickle. The HI hostels are the safest and the best.

Look at sandiegohostels.org

The one downtown is only four blocks away from the Convention Center.
