I've used the service from the Philadelphia station, but not from the NYC station, though I've been there. I would ask at the Amtrak waiting room which is in the middle of the big concourse.
Once you find them, they will tag your luggage and put it on a cart. Once thr train arrives, you will follow tem and the cart to the elevator down to the train and he will place your luggage on the train. I tip $10 for myself, don't know if that's what would be right for each bag in a group.

You find the Red Caps at the Amtrak waiting area - the only place with seats in the main promenade of the station. You tell them what train you are on and how many bags (I don;t think one guy can take 6 large bags - you will need at least 2).
They are free - but for that much luggage I would give them a nice tip - at least $20 each - since they get you downstairs early, put your luggage on the train and help you find seats together. The train will come in from Boston with at quite few people already seated so be prepared as to how you will break up if there are not 6 seats together (possible

A great service. Our Red Cap took our 6 bags and another family's 4 bags, on the one trolley. Had to go down two separate escalators, very impressive. We were seated about 15 minutes before general boarding. We tipped him $ 20.
