Red Caps Amtrak help needed
Travelling tomorrow from Penn Station NYC. There are 6 of us with 6 large bags plus carry on. We wo want to use Red Caps but not sure how it all works. Where do we meet them? Any help appreciated.

I've used the service from the Philadelphia station, but not from the NYC station, though I've been there. I would ask at the Amtrak waiting room which is in the middle of the big concourse.
Once you find them, they will tag your luggage and put it on a cart. Once thr train arrives, you will follow tem and the cart to the elevator down to the train and he will place your luggage on the train. I tip $10 for myself, don't know if that's what would be right for each bag in a group. |

There's a redcap desk in the Amtrak waiting room. Just go in the waiting room with your tickets and approach the desk. They'll set you up, and they will find you when it's time to go.

You find the Red Caps at the Amtrak waiting area - the only place with seats in the main promenade of the station. You tell them what train you are on and how many bags (I don;t think one guy can take 6 large bags - you will need at least 2).
They are free - but for that much luggage I would give them a nice tip - at least $20 each - since they get you downstairs early, put your luggage on the train and help you find seats together. The train will come in from Boston with at quite few people already seated so be prepared as to how you will break up if there are not 6 seats together (possible |
I'd still tip $10 per bag.

Thanks so much. The map was very helpful and also other information. We are leaving early for the station so should have plenty of time to get sorted.

Whoa!!! Ten bucks PER bag? I thought I was a "big tipper" but this is over the top even for me but as they say, "whatever."

Are these guys paid a salary? Because if so I agree that $10 a bag seems way out of line. But then, I manage my own bags and have never used one.

A great service. Our Red Cap took our 6 bags and another family's 4 bags, on the one trolley. Had to go down two separate escalators, very impressive. We were seated about 15 minutes before general boarding. We tipped him $ 20.
