luggage and the train station

We will be taking a train from Rome to Naples (and eventually back again). I can see how to book the tickets on the Trenitalia web site, and will use an IC Plus train or a Eurostar. What do we do with our luggage--we will probably travel second class--do we check our luggage or store it near our seat? If we have to check it, I'll want to plan extra time to do that before we board the train.

Thank you for any replies!

Hi T,

>What do we do with our luggage--

You hump it up onto the train from the platform.

Large suitcases go on the shelves at the end of the car (usually the end opposite to where you got on) and small cases go on the racks above the seats.

"You hump it up onto the train from the platform," which translates into English: "Pack light because you're going to have to lift that sucker."

And sometimes the racks are crowded. And there isn't much time to hop on the train; it pulls into the station and you get on, quickly.

Many people think I am nuts, but if I have anything larger than a very small bag, especially on certain routes, like yours, I take a stell bicycle cord and lock it to the large racks at the end of the car. Moving quickly, of course.

The luggage is your responsibility. Often you need to lift it up 3 steep narrow steps from the platform to the train, drag it down the corridor and then lift it up onto an overhead rack . If it's too big for that you have to find a place to leave it - often at the end of the car. If so - I would either chain it to something or go watch it if the train makes a stop.
