Bodi, I am truly sorry you had such a horrible experience. I guess I have always been lucky with security people.

I wish the entire country could get their act together with all this security stuff. I feel every airport/bus station/train station should give the same type and level of security. I was recently given the "special search" and after a double search of everything, it cracked me up later when I realized they totally missed my tweezers in my purse!

I got ticked off once prior to 9/11 when a security officer in Atlanta took my purse with a couple hundred dollars in it behind a screen to search it. I grabbed the rest of my belongings (almost leaving my plane ticket behind) and told her in a stern manner that she could search anything I had but NOT to take it out of my sight. She needed to realize that if anything came up missing I planned on blaming HER. She got the message, but I didn't get an apology. If I had time, I would have made a formal complaint against her.

Thank you for your understanding. It was my first trip by plane in years, and now I'm not sure about flying ever again. I'm deeply saddened and concerned for our country. Like my husband says, locking the gate won't slow anyone determined to enter. A false sense of security is more dangerous.

I for one am glad about the new security measures. And for those who feel the wrong people are being searched (i.e. who's a "threat" or not), check out this news on CNN today.

kvick, good one-- Monk. lol I like added security and I don't object to removing my shoes, just think there should be some consideration for health. Sure I walk on the beach but not in my sock feet and I'm not putting them directly back in my shoes. As I stated, I bring old ankle socks which I either throw away or put in a plastic bag. Just my preference. If you don't mind cleaning the floor with your socks, go right ahead.

Speaking of taking your shoes off when going through airport security....how about a fresh approach?

VINDICATED!!!!!!!!

I proceeded undaunted to the SJ Security screening with my white socks and their plastic zip loc bag for my trip to NYC last week even though you all made fun of me calling me the Monk, and asking stupid questions like don't you walk on the beach barefooted. I put my shoes on the belt and slipped into my white socks and as I passed through the metal detector the male federal screener commented to me "SMART LADY". Not believing my ears I said "Excuse me?" To which he replied that HE TELLS HIS WIFE TO DO THE SAME THING. So, now you have it from someone who watches everyone pass through the screening everyday for a living.

What really convinced my husband that he should not be walking through in his dress socks and then slipping his feet back into his shoes was a good look at my white socks on our return trip through the screening at JFK. As I was taking them off and throwing them away in the trash can he observed that they were filthy.

So, make fun of me, but I encourage you to take an extra pair of socks to walk through screening and don't walk through in your dress socks you will be putting back in your shoes or barefooted.

I'm not going to make fun of you Rhonda, but please have those shoes off and the white socks on well BEFORE you get to the screening area. I don't want to be the one behind you waiting while you untie and pull off your shoes...then pull on your socks.
I also don't want to be the one behind you after you've gone thru and have to now take off the socks...throw them away..and tie your shoes again, so move to the side and get outta my way!

I would still like to understand what can be hidden on bare feet and how. I was wondering about simple scuff slippers and bare feet? Switch to slippers on arrival to the airport, then continue to security. Clear shoes, and slip back on and ziplock slippers in outside pocket of case. Use at each airport, then launder at home, ready for next trip. Also, should men and women be treated the same? It is the irregularities that leave a loop hole. Maybe the airport should have paper protectors for everyone entering the airport and dispose at exit. I wish the airport properties were secured, rather than each gate. Invest in security equiptment for everything and everyone entering the property.Maintenence, cleaning, food staff, Everything & Everyone exactly the same, making airports and planes both cleared. What do you think?

If you guys read the link I posted a few messages above, you might feel better about going through airport security (only in Atlanta right now, but should be more widely used in the near future).

Yes, I read the article about the device invented by a boy scout but you still have to take your shoes off if they "fail".

I'm with you bodi.
