Punta Cana -Dominican Republic
I am planning a trip to Punta Cana. After reading reviews from Trip Advisor, I am a little concerned about people saying they got sick either from the water or food. Don't they filter the water at the rsorts? I do not plan on eating outside of the resorts. Can anyone tell of their experience at the resorts. I am going to the Bavara Beach Casino Hotel.

For some reason this destination seems to have more problems than any other place. I know people who have been there 11 times and never got sick. I know people including my husband and daughter and her husband who were deathly ill. Just be careful of eating seafood, and of course the water. Yes the hotels purify the water, but who knows? I would also go to some site debbiesdominican (something like that) and check out reviews of the hotel you are staying in. Of course post under the caribbean board as well.

You mention not eating outside the resort as a precaution, but these bad reports are coming from tourists who did that same thing in many cases. I don't know why Punta Cana has this particular problem so much worse than other similar destinations.

I don't know why either it is just the way it is there. I know of some people who ended up with horrific medical bills as well. I know one lady on the forum loves it there and claims to never have a problem. I believe she stays at the Sunscape chains. I would try them if I were to ever return. We can get sick here (taco bell)as well.

This is my theory...
Punta Cana is almost 100% all-inclusives.
Many of the areas in Mexico that are notorious for illness are all-inclusive resorts.
We don't stay at AI's in Mexico or the Caribbean for the simple reason that they have all 3 meals as buffets due to the food costs being much cheaper than a la carte.
Think about it. Food sitting out for HOURS in the heat with flies and sticky-fingered tourists picking over it - no thanks.
We have been going to the Caribbean and Mexico for 4 to 6 weeks every year for 15 years and have never been sick. I honestly think one of the reasons for that is that we do not stay at all-inclusives - ever.

That makes sense. I traveled to the DR two trips, but back in the 70's & 80's, and had a great time. We went independently and did not stay at resorts, actually we ate all kinds of crazy foods from beach vendors like that and were fine.
Same thing for me in Mexico. I think the point above about the danger of buffet style food in warm climates is well taken!
