If you were going to Portland, which hotel would be great to stay at. Money mid price???

Looking for one with a suite/kitchen

Where in Portland do you want to stay? What is your price range? There are a few Residence Inns near downtown that are in OK locations - one down near Riverplace, one on the east side near Lloyd Center. These presumably have kitchens.

Try Hotwire.com and see if any hotels with kitchens come up (though perhaps you wouldn't be able to guess the specific hotel until you purchase it).

We stayed several nights in the Fifth Avenue Suites in May and really liked the large room, good service, location, and nightly wine reception. The restaurant served good breakfasts, too. It was offering some good specials at the time, so the rate was reasonable for the high quality.

If you will have a car I'd suggest McMenamins Kennedy School. It's an old elementary school that has been converted into a B&B. They have a good restaurant and a movie theater. It's North of downtown, so you'll need a car.

Downtown I've stayed at the Marriott on Front (also Natio). It's got a view of the river and you can usually get a good rate that includes parking and breakfast through their web site.

We go often and always stay at an Embassy Suites. The Washington Square and airport locations offer the better value + free parking but they are NOT in Downtown. Certainly not inconvenient, though.
On our last visit we stayed at the Homewood Suites in Beaverton which was great, too.
Both offer large suites with free b'fast, cocktails and parking.
