There are not many, if any, hotels on the ocean on that stretch, unless I am forgetting something. It is mostly residential development and state parks. If you want a beach vacation, you could try Fire Island, a barrier island off the south shore of Long Island. You get there by ferry from the "mainland" of Long Island.

I know nothing about any of the hotels there; the various communities have very different demographics so you might want to inquire about this before you select a place to stay if you go this route:

You need to understand that much of Long Island west of the east end is a massive suburban area - not resorts that you get from the Hamptons and east.
There are lots of public beaches along the south shore - if you're ready for the north atlantic (chilly water and pounding surf). But the area doesn;t have much in the way of places to stay since most are state parks.
As for other sights there are a bunch: Old Bethpage Village Restoration (with colonial and later houses and docent demonstrating life and crafts in earlier days), the Cradle of AViation Museum in Garden City as well as spots on the north shore such as Teddy Roosevelt's Home at Sagamore Hill.
Fire Island is a barrier island that runs along a good part of the south shore with a number of different villages reachable by ferry - some family, some singles, some gay - but I don't know about lodging except rental houses.
This area is NOT rich in places to stay - since thee sights are visited mostly by locals and fire island is mainly long-term rentals.
It would help if you tell us what you plan on doing, who and how many you are and what your nightly budget is.

West of Hamptons you will not find much you want. There are lots of motels in/near the numerous office parks - but not really beach towns with lodgings nearby. Even in the Hamptons most of the shore ie either private property (of the uber wealthy) or town or state beaches. Typically the inns or motels are in the town and a drive or bike ride from the beach.
Montauk/Amagansett have a couple of condo colonies right on the beach but I think they usually rent by the week Sat to Sat. You might look at those. But realize that mid May is still pre season (Memorial day - end May is the real start) and a lot of restaurants will be open only weekends until then.

Well, good luck. As stated above there for all intents and purposes no hotels/motels on the south "coast" of Long Island, esp. to the west of the Hamptons. You might google LI Mcarthur airport, Smithtown, Hauppage, Islandia etc to find lodging w/in easy driving distance of the south coast.

Garden City Hotel is about 30 minutes from Jones Beach - a huge state park with beach access via numerous parking lots, one of which has a boardwalk with a variety of services (chair rental, mini-golf, etc) and a concert venue. This is populated almost exclusively by locals - and the areas in between are back to back suburbs with tons of traffic.
On busy days the beaches will have in the area of 100K people - and upward of 8 million visitor per year,
Don;t know the parking/entrance rates since I haven;t been in more than 10 years - but infested it as a child since we lived about 30 minutes away.

Sounds like you booked something but you don't tell us what. There is very little in the way of hotels on the south shore before the Hamptons. The Allegria in Long Beach could be great but it isn't...hugely overpriced with awful service. There are a few inns and b & b's in Eastport but imo, for what you want, you might as well head to the Hamptons. Hampton Maid in Hampton Bays fits your budget and is a nice place. You are not far from Southampton there.
