For several theories as to how The Big Apple got it's nickname, check out the St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture.

Buffalo = The Queen City (of the Great Lakes)

During the 1970's it was referred to as the "Armpit of the East."

Smog City -- L.A., but I think a few others have us beat.

The latest new nickname for London (although maybe my English mates were referring to England as a whole) is "Blighty". I've now heard this twice in the last month. Is it London or England? Anyone?

Rochester NY -- Flour City which city fathers rewrote as the Flower City
Boston -- not just Beantown but "The Hub" (of the universe, of course)
Chicago - Windy City (all double entendres relevant); City That Works; City of Big Shoulders --> City of Big Armpits
Charlotte NC also calls itself the Queen City but with only one meaning intended

Surfergirl - Blighty is a colloquial name for England, and does not really mean London. It was originally used by the soldiers in WW1.

From Urdu "bilayati" meaning foreign; passed on from soldiers of the Anglo-Indian army.
