Vegas/Henderson -- where to live?
Hi All
Over the next several months, I will begin to look for a place to rent in Las Vegas or Henderson for a year as my wife and I start to try places out West for relocation of my consulting business and eventually retirement. I've visited Vegas often and have driven around the outskirts that are currently being developed. It appears from my research that there are short-term rentals all over the area -- I would welcome recommendations as to what part of town would be a good place to live for a year. Thanks in advance -- you folks have always been helpful.

I would recommend west/southwest Las Vegas. This includes the Summerlin and Lakes areas, plus areas south. This seems to be one of the fastest growing areas in town, so you can probably find a nice, new place to live.
Most of the apartments in town (especially the nicer ones) require a 6 or 9 month lease, but that wouldn't be a problem if you're planning on staying for a year. There are also furnished aparments if that's what you need. You could also rent a house as most of them require 9 months to a year. I think it's harder to find a furnished house, but probably still doable.
I live in the southwest and I don't think I would live anywhere else in the valley. Housing/apartments are more "upper class", but not outrageously expensive (well, Summerlin maybe) and you have easy access to highways and businesses. I-215 is completed on the west side, so it loops from I-15 north of town all the way through to Henderson. The strip is about 20-30 minutes away and an easy trip on the highways or surface streets.
I'm not that familiar with Henderson, but there are nice parts there as well. North Las Vegas also has some nice parts, but you generally need to travel around or through bad parts to get there...
What are you looking for in a neighborhood? Are there any places in particular that have caught your eye?

thanks for the very thoughtful response -- my last trip out to vegas I actually drove all the way out through summerlin to the outskirts of the developed area, seemingly almost to the mountains. I actually have frequented the west side in the past for Rosemary's, the nice library, panera, the movies, so I was happy to hear your description. I'll be working from home -- will just need to access the airport now and then (seemed pretty quick via 215). I would guess access to a pool and golf would be attractive to us. Now, I'll welcome the thoughts of someone who can extol the virtues of Henderson -- I've heard it can be nice as well. Thanks again.
