I'm arriving late and going to Sedona the next day so I'm looking for a very nice hotel not too far from the airport. Please help.

Try The Buttes in Tempe. On a hill overlooking the valley. Short drive/cab from the airport. Nice rooms, beautiful grounds and pool. I have always enjoyed staying there.

There are no very nice hotels near the airport.
The airport's in a rather burned out part of town.
There are decent hotels in Tempe, a reasonably short drive by the highway, and the Buttes, as noted above, is a decent place.
But you'd need to drive to the Biltmore area of 24th and Camelback to find really nice hotels.

There are many hotels near the airport. Lots of cities are near Phoenix -- Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, etc.

Check www.biddingfortravel.com and then bid on Priceline. You can get a 3 star hotel for about $30-35 for the night. I just got the Hilton East Mesa which is very nice for $33 a night. You should also do your rental car through Priceline. You can get a full size rental car for about $20 a day with unlimited mileage.

Obviously, xxx, you've never been to the Embassy Suites Fort Lauderdale, which Priceline does rate as a 3* hotel. Priceline does use numerous "very nice" 3* hotels.

That would explain the difference between your definition of very nice and that of most people.

Very nice means just that...a lot better than average. A brand new Embassy Suites still isn't a "very nice" hotel in my book...no matter where it's located.

Fodors list the Doubletree Guest Suites Gateway Center as the nicest in the airport area so I booked for one evening (I'm in the same situation as Irina). Is this hotel/location OK ????

Last February I stayed at the Chandler Sheraton San Marcos Hotel. It was a very nice resort and about 20 minutes from the airport. I booked it through Priceline and was accepted at the bid of $30/night. I felt guilty about such a great deal! While I was checking in, someone else was quoted a price of $120 for the same night. The resort had 2 pools, golf course, tennis courts, a Starbucks in it's shopping area, etc. I only needed a hotel for one night and it worked out super. That was my first experience with Priceline for hotels and I thought it worked out great. I hope this information helps.

I think before some people continue with their sniping we should all realize that descriptions like "very nice" are subjective. We don't know Irina's definition of what "very nice" means.

You simply aren't going to find a four star hotel near the Phoenix airport. And there isn't really a point in driving 20 minutes to Chandler which would put you even further away from Sedona not to mention having to deal with the additional traffic in the morning.

If you want to go to downtown Phoenix (10 minutes away) you can stay at the Hyatt Regency or the Crowne Plaza. On the east side of the airport on 44th St. you have the Marriott or Doubletree Suites. There is also an Embassy Suites although it doesn't appear to be that great of an Embassy property. There is a Hilton near the airport as well.

Otherwise, I suggest that you go to Tempe and the Buttes, like one poster suggested.

I'd stay clear of Mesa which is going to be a drive.

Arriving late and leaving the next day -- so are you looking for a resort hotel for a couple of hours ?? or just a "nice" place, i.e. safe, comfortable ?? Nice means many things to many people. To some nice can be a Super8, or the Ritz-Carleton or anything inbetween. You need to clarify your meaning of nice to get worthwhile responses. If you are only staying overnight and arriving late I'd not be looking at resort hotels,but each to their own. there are Holiday Inns (and Holiday Inn Express) near the airport, also Doubletree I believe. For a few hours stay I would not be driving to Chandler or Scottsdale.

About 2 months ago, I stayed at the Hilton which was about a 5 minute drive from the airport. And right off the interstate (although not sure if the one going to Sedonna). There were a couple of other hotels right by the Hilton but I can't recall the names. I'd certainly recommend the Hilton if you're looking for something very close to the airport.

I have stayed a few times at the Airport Hilton, which I have read is regarded as one of the best airport hotels in the USA; I agree. I have also stayed at the Radisson and the Doubletree and both are very nice for what you need. All have free pickup services.

Obviously you haven't been to Embassy Suites in Ft Lauderdale either Andrew or you wouldn't toss that out as an example of "very nice". In fact, wasn't that where your parents stayed, not you? How can you rate it at all? Nice is in the eye of the beholder, OBVIOUSLY, and sometimes our "EarlyBird Special" parents, mine included, aren't the best judge of what is very nice and what isn't. I have seen the hotel in question. It's a hotel. It's an Embassy Suites. No more, no less.

Irina, we stayed at the Phoenix Hyatt downtown before our early flight out. It was an easy 10 minute drive to the airport, even in the beginning of rush hour as most traffic was going the other direction. It qualifies as nice, but I don't know about very nice.
