We are taking a few months to drive across Canada and the US...Hubby's dream is to play Pebble Beach but I am not sure when we will be in the area...Do you need to book tee times well in advance?...Any advice on how to suprise Hubby with this?...Thanks.

Is he going to play alone or are you going to join him? A few years ago we dropped by Pebble Beach and my husband was able to get on within the hour because he was a single. They paired him up with someone and I went on to hike.

Thank you so much Birdie...he will be golfing alone and I was hoping there was a chance he may be able to get on but I have heard you need to make tee off times a year in advance...Thanks again for the hope!

I played Pebble Beach in 2000. I had a conference in SF, and flew out a couple of days early in hopes of being able to walk on as a single, and that's what happened. I was paired up with a couple and another single golfer, and it was magical.

At that time, you could call 24 hours in advance as a walk-on...I called as soon as the pro shop opened on a Saturday morning, and got an afternoon tee time for Sunday. I would check their website for the current policy, in case it has changed. Good luck!

My daughter gave my husband a round at Pebble Beach for Father's Day one year. (They lived in Carmel at the time). He just called the pro shop that day and was able to get a time for the next morning - no problem. I think by virtue of the type of course it is there are more tourists than regualar members like other lesser known courses. My husband plays a lot of golf when we are traveling and as a single has really never had a problem getting out. He calls ahead and they just tell him to just come in.

My DH has played most of the courses there during conferences, so I am not sure about reservations.

However, friends wanted to play there recently and were told they had to have a room at the lodge to play the courses. So, they rented a room! I am not sure if that is the norm or special cirumstances. These are not the kind of people to make stuff up either.

I believe needing a room refers to the fact that they always hold some spots for hotel guests. When your friends called those were probably the only openings left on the course, so by renting a room, they could play. But with enough advance notice that is not the case -- just lots and lots of money.

Your comments have been great...It won't matter if it's expensive...Once in a lifetime thing..Even if I am forced(haha) to stay at their resort and relax while he plays...It all sounds great...Thank you all so much!

I don't remember the resort as being a great place to hang out. There are a couple of shops that have more than your average pro shop. That could have changed since I have been. If your husband doesn't mind you doing it without him, do the 17 mile drive. Its worth seeing.

The part that gets sold out months in advance is the lodging, and lodge guests get first preference on tee times. However, as others (and I) have noted, you can get a tee time 24 hours in advance WITHOUT have to stay at the resort.

I just went to their website, and they've updated since I've last looked. There's even a clickable calendar that shows the availability for times on a given date. It appears the same rules still apply regarding making tee times for non-resort guests...24 hours in advance.

One other recommendation...if your husband can at all walk the course as opposed to riding in a golf cart, I highly recommend it. The couple I played with rode in a cart, while the other two of us walked. We both noted that the cart paths tend to run on the side of the holes AWAY from the ocean, so you'll miss the serenity and beauty of being able to stroll cliffside while you walk the holes, something not to be missed.

One other thing...you can walk along if you desire. My wife came out to join me for the following weekend, and we drove back to Monterey and walked along and in the course. However, you might want to not plan to stay the whole time...it can be up to a six-hour round of golf.

If you want something to do at Pebble Beach while your husband is playing golf, go to the spa! It is fabulous! I remember having a pedicure in front of a roaring fire in a cozy room. Nice indeed! Unfortunately, it might be hard to schedule treatments at the last minute. But defintely try. It is a very nice spa!
