Seals at Sconset beach (Nantucket)

Just got back from Nantucket and wanted to report (for anyone who is interested in this kind of thing) that the grey seals are hanging out at Sconset beach, about a mile down the beach walking to the right of the life guard stand at the beach entrance. It was Sunday afternoon and we saw about eight of them frolicking in the surf right at the edge of the beach. There was a state environmental officer there who told us that the seals use this area of the beach as a resting area (there is a visible sand bar about 50 yards off shore). The seals were very curious and definitely noticed the people on the beach looking at them. I'm sure they were wondering why we were all so interested in them? I have never seen them come in so close - at one point several of them were body surfing and ended up on the beach.

There are often big bull seals here with their harems, sometimes MUCH closer to Sconset.

At Madaket, at the opposite end of the island, they have followed us for some distance when we were walking on the beach. They seem to be particularly curious about dogs!

They are great fun to watch, but do not approach them, even when they look like they might need help. They can be vicious and are much faster than you think they might be. Federal laws protect them from contact with people, and you can get in major trouble for touching one.

Ackislander: I think that we did see a bull with his harem - one of the seals looked much larger and darker than the others. Also, as you pointed out, it is best not to approach or touch them as they are wild animals and while they look friendly, they are not. We kept our distance from them. Interesting to hear that they are curious about dogs.
