Did my first post disappear? Sorry if this is a duplicate.

Trying to help a family member who is traveling to visit us in Portland this winter on the best route for them.

They will be pulling a trailer.

They want to go as far north on the 5 then head to the coast for the sake of traveling along the Oregon coast and to avoid the any snow in the Sikiyous.

Any routes that are better than others from the Sacramento area north that are lower elevation (to avoid snow/ice) and not as winding (because of the trailer).

lizzard: There really isn'y any route from I-5 to the coast that isn't winding, 20, 36 and 299 are all winding to very winding. Their best bet is probably hwy 20 from Willaims, around Clearlake, and on to Ukiah, and that is simply because it s the shortest route to 101.

I notice that people are starting to confuse a poster named Suze and me Suzie. Suze shouldn't be shouldered with the burden of my lame attempts here.

I second the suggestion that they go across on 20 from Williams to Calpella and then north on 101. We see lots of trailers on that route. I wouldn't suggest 299 or 199 because they are too wiggly-woggly (my wife's description).

299 is the best route.

and "wiggly-woggliness" aside, what about elevations if snow/ice is a concern?

Lizzard, pass elevations through the Coast Range are not high enough for snow/ice to be considerations UNLESS a headline-making storm has hit the west coast, in which case the whole enterprise might be questionable.

To avoid snow you must get over to the coast way before you reach the Shasta area and going south before you get to Ashland.
IMO crossing over on 20 at Williams is the only way..
We have done this route with a trailer with no problems...

If the trip is to avoid snow then 20 over 299. The first summit west of Redding is Buckhorn it is 3212 feet the higest on 299 between Redding and 101 it gets snow almost every year. The other three passes on 299 west to 101 all get snow in most years
