Best route from Oregon Coast to reach 5?

Mid-state would be best for us.
Or somewhere in the South.

We don't have time to travel too far up
the Coast from Calif on our way to San Juans.

Have seen 99, 20 & 38 all mentioned.
Any recent impressions...perhaps some have construction going on or similar?

Most scenic this time of year?
Thanks!

I was going to suggest 38, but I guess you've ruled it out.

I would suggest 38 too. Or 199 from Crescent City to Grants Pass, then a drive-by viewing detour up to Crater Lake before heading north.

How about 42 from Coos Bay to Roseburg?

I agree that a goo route is Hwy 42 from Coos Bay to Roseburg on I5. Any route from the coast inland is beautiful any time of the year. Reedsport to Drain is another option.

I think SR 38 is the most attractive (Umpqua canyon) plus it's probably one of the faster ways to connect.

Ooh, out of the ways I've driven, I sure like Highway 20, from Newport to Corvallis/Albany. It's got a few curves and hills, but the forest views are really beautiful (and I'm not all that into curves, hills or forests!). It's much better than Lincoln City/Salem or Cannon Beach/Portland (I think 18 and 26, respectively).

We drove Route 38 again last week and were reminded, once again, that it is a very beautiful drive--the most scenic from shore to I-5 if you like frequent river views and open spaces (rather than a road with trees towering on both sides).
