Palm Springs in July
Welcome views - looking at possible 3 night stay in Wyndham resort in PS on July 5th - don't want to do much other than trip on tram and out to eat when things cool down late in evening - is it unbearably hot at that time of year ? Have been to Turkey in 40 degrees and managed !

It is unbearably hot then in my opinion. We were there a few years back in July and it was so hot that you couldn't stand to be outside between about 9 am and 5 pm. It only cools down to about 80 degrees at night. My inlaws flight leaving was cancelled b/c the runways were so hot the tires on the planes were softening. (I'm not kidding!) Personally, I'd avoid PS at that time.

Yes it's very hot but imo, not unbearable and still doable. If its the only time you can go, then go. We've done most of our SoCal and southwest touring during the summer months since its the only time we have 3-4 weeks free with the kids. And we've always had a great time. As you might have discovered too, the rates are great. Again imo, the summer heat and humidity in the east are much tougher to take!

It's very hot but, bearable or unbearable is really a personal issue.
When my kids were younger, PS in the summer was one of our favorite getaways. My wife and I would lounge in the shade and get in the pool often enough to remain comfortable.87 The kids would play in the pool for hours. Unless you've experienced it, you can't believe how good it feels to lay in the shade in a swim suit and bake.
At that time, there were some great bargains to be had compared to winter rates and we went fairly often from San Diego and later, from Orange County.

Thanks for comments - variety in views is the spice as they say ! Ellen, I got more than I planned for with your report - have only been to Orlando and NY in US before now (live in Ireland - SYY could drive full coast of Ireland about 3 or 4 times and not beat his 6k mile trip !) and have to start with US map to see where you went. Would be very interested if you have any trip reports that cover any part of our planned itineray over 16 days - Anaheim, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Carmel and San F - and yes, our options for travel with kids (aged 10, 13 and 17) are very limited due to holidays and exams. Thanks again

obviously not "unbearable" as people do live year round in the city. however, i will state that i wouldn't plan on doing too much. i use to upkeep a home there and would get up at 5:30 to work in the yard. by 9:00 it was too hot to do anything physical. but, that just meant that we had to stay by the pool all day. a cool drink, good book...a great day. you can plan a day on the tram. it will be much cooler up there. if you've been in turkey in the summer, you'll be fine.

We've been to Palm Desert over the last two Memorial Days. Several of the restaurants we chose were closing for the summer after that weekend. Don't know how wide spread that is, but you list eating out as one of the things you want to do.

Everything in the Palm Springs used to close down for the summer but now the majority of places stay open. It will be very hot as others have mentioned. You would enjoy the pool in the morning and late afternoon, too hot in the mid-day sun although in the shade might be bearable. Going up to the tram to cool off is a great idea.
Whispers you mention that your trip is over 16 days and you are going to Anaheim, Santa Barbara, Carmel and SF along with Palm Springs. Are you flying into one airport and out of another? I personally would skip Palm Springs and spend more time in the LA area, go to San Diego or to Cambria and visit Hearst Castle. If you really feel you need to go to Palm Springs, you could cut your stay down to 2 nights. Driving out to Palm Springs and back is not that far from Anaheim but seems out of the way considering the route of the rest of your trip.
I am actually heading out to PS right now to see some clients-beautiful today 74 degrees. This is a great time of year to go to the desert!

I owned a condo in Palm Desert for 5 years. July and August can be brutal. And can be humid (more so July during the 'monsoon'). This is from someone who is ok up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (assuming humidity is under 15%). I've been there when it was 128 degrees. Granted that was a record, but you could wake up and it was 95 degrees at 6:00 am. On the other hand, if you just want to lie on the bed and watch TV in a/c, July is lovely.

I would NOT go to Palm Springs on this itinerary.
You are coming all the way from Ireland and want to waste a day on PS? Now Palm Springs has a lot going for it - but in Summer it is just a HOT place. It won't be scenic, and you won't be able to be outside (except in the pool) during the day. You can lay by a pool in LA if that is all you want - and be able to do other things.
Normally Yosemite would be 10000000% preferable -- but you are talking about the week of July 4th and it will be mobbed.
Going to PS in and of itself is fine - but it just doesn't make sense for this trip at that time of year.
I would simply add a day to one of your stops along the coast.
