What rental car company has the least cost for one way rentals? I know Hertz doesn't charge for the second person, but their one way rates from Rapid City to Salt lake were over $1000 for 12 days in July. There has to be a better solution out there.

Travelocity has a link under their itinerary scroll bar saying one way fares. Check that for the least expensive to your destination.

I know when I needed one in No Cal once Hertz was the only company that allowed one ways to that area.

Last year, we had a one way reserved fr. Tucson to Las Vegas, then another fr. LasVegas to Vancouver. Then plans changed at the last minute.

We went fr. Jacksonville, FL to Las Vegas. With 1 phone call I had the Tucson changed to Jax.

For 3 weeks rental, in 2 cars, I was charged under $1,000.00. This was all with Avis. I could not even do this with any other car rental co.

Taking the car into Canada was allowed thru LV but not thru Tucson or Jax, that's why the switch in LV.

Now in Oct.,we are using Avis again fr. Richmond, VA to Albany, NY - 1 week-a little over $300.00.

Cars were no trouble and even got upgraded fr. Int. to Premium at no charge in LV.

I have used National car rental 3 times for one-way rentals & their fees were the lowest on my route.

My experience is that you really have to research each company. One company may offer a better deal between one set of cities while charging more for two different cities. Maryann's story about Tucson is a case in point. It's a lot of work, but the savings is probably worth it.

You can compare rates on the Orbitz.com site. We just got an excellent rate for a one-way rental between Sacramento and San Francisco: $28.

You might try Advantage Rent A Car (www.arac.com). They have pretty favorable one way deals, particularly in the western states. I also found Hertz competitive.
