Oceanfront Hotels

Does anyone have a suggestion for a nice hotel with rooms that have a balcony with an ocean view. I am traveling in Sept and would like to keep the cost under $200/night. I will probably stay around Bar Harbor and Kennebunkport. I don't need restaurant, pool, etc.

Can't help you with K, but in BH, the Bar Harbor Inn has rooms with great views and balconies. Not sure of the price, but I'd guess rates would fall in September to within your price range.

Don't count on rates falling until after Columbus Day. September continues to be peak season with fall foliage tours all through the state. Cliff House, just to the south of Kennebunk, in Ogunquit, is oceanfront and may be under $200/ night. Try the town's website for links to oceanfront lodging. Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, about 30 minutes north of Kennebunk, overlooks a Beach and may be an option as well. Balance Rock or the Blue Nose Inn would be my choices in Bar Harbor for places with good ocean views.

We've stayed at the Cliff House in Ogunquit but were disappointed as the oceanfront has no beach, just cliffs. It IS beautiful scenery but our room was dirty, and smelled wet and moldy (bad if you have allergies) and the staff apologized but did nothing to help other than re-clean the room (twice) and finally found food under the fridge. IF you were to stay there, stick to the main building only.

I can't say about Kennebunkport, but Bar Harbor has some great affordable rooms. I go every year and stay at the Wonder View Inn. It's not right on the ocean, but has gorgeous views. I stay in the courtyard section, and every room has a deck overlooking the courtyard and the water. www.wonderviewinn.com. Also, the Bar Harbor Inn's rates don't go down until 10/13--I was just on their web site yesterday.

By the way, Wonder View Inn's rates are very, very affordable. Nothing higher than $180--at any time of the year.

Check out the Maine Innkeepers Association website for tons of listings of all kinds of accommodations state wide. Has links to individual resorts/properties. I think it is maineinnkeepers.com

Suggestion for Bar Harbor: Balance Rock Inn. 4 diamond, oceanfront, pool, dining, convenient location. Can access website from maineinns.com. Just search under Bar Harbor. Tons of listings for accommodations will come up. Good Luck.

Just a warning, DO NOT stay at the Golden Anchor Inn in Bar Harbor. Dirty, holes in the wall, air conditioning not available in all rooms(they brought us a fan on a stand!). We stayed in July for three days and paid for oceanfront. Guess what? We never saw that there was an island across the water until the fog lifted the third day.Not a good experience. Please learn from our mistakes. Bar Harbor is known to have alot of foggy days. So, beware!
