NYC with teens

Headed there for my daughter's 14th b/day next month. Am seeing Mamma Mia one night and reservations at Tao the next. Am stumped for the 3rd night. No discounts for "In the Heights" and "Shrek", "Awesome 80's prom" is not available. Am paying for 8 people, so don't want to break the bank. HELP!! thnx

Tao is an overpriced less than satisfactory place. If you want ro save money there are plenty of other spots.

Are you sure there are no discounts for In the Heights?

How about ALTAR BOYZ? It's Off-B'way and I've been seeing discounts for it.

There are discounts for In the Heights (they go until March ... check at Playbill.com to see if you can find the discount code).

I've been to Tao within the last year and would never go again, nor is it a place I'd take a teen. Rosa Mexicano is much more fun and less drink-oriented. The food at Buddakan is so much better, and the restaurant is still pretty spectacular that I think it's a better option. Tao is so overpriced and so mediocre that I just can't think it's a good idea for anyone.

There is a discount offer for Shrek the Musical--$45-$68 Tuesday thru Thursday performances; $55-$80 Friday thru Sunday performances.
Visit BroadwayOffers.com or call 212-947-8844. Use the code SHK4DML.
The offer is good thru March 15.

Visited NYC with my teenage nieces. We got onstage tickets to Xanadu. They thought that was SO cool. The characters were literally inches away at times and involved the onstage audience throughout the production. It was a lot of fun (although I would like to go back and see the action from the front instead of the back sometime). Also the tickets for onstage seats were much less than those in the orchestra area.

i agree with the other posters about tao.
it used to good when it first opened. now, it is overpriced with mediocre food.
if you are looking for asian eclectic food, buddha bar in the meat packing area is a fun option.
they originally opened in paris and are known for their eclectic world music dvds.
pastis in the same area is french bistro style with opportunity for lots of celebrity sightings.

Tao lost any trendy it had quite a while ago. Agree to head downtown for something that would impress teens -esp those looking to see "someone".

maybe improv comedy, which is participatory with suggestions from the audience. We've done this for two of my kids' birthdays, and it was a big hit!

We've gone to Chicago CIty Limits, but be aware that they do have some off-color moments!!

Another one I've read about, but not been to is the National Comedy Theatre, which bills itself as "family-friendly."

If they're theater lovers, you should have a meal at Ellen's Stardust Diner with singing waiters and waitresses. Again, my daughter and her friends love this place. It is a touristy spot, and just diner food, but the staff are all aspiring performers and often are very good. DD has gone to Ellen's numerous times. The first for her 14th birthday, and she is now 16 YO.
