NYC: Has anyone ever attended musicals that are part of City Center's Encores! Summer Series?
One of the shows in City Center's Encores! Summer Series is Gypsy, starring Patti Lupone at Mama Rose. I like Gypsy and I love Patti Lupone. Has anyone ever gone to shows in this series? Are they "Broadway quality"? Previews start July 9th, and we'd be seeing it July 10th, so no time to wait for reviews. What do you think?

The performances in these shows are certainly Broadway-quality (and sometimes quite a bit above that level because the caliber of stars is so high since the performances are so limited). But you will not get a full Broadway experience there. These are concerts, not full productions. So costumes are relatively limited, as is staging. You'll get the full score and most of the book but not a full Broadway experience. So I'd recommend it as entertainment but will warn you that it's not a full Broadway show.

One warning--this is a concert theater so it's much bigger. I fiy sit in the "cheap seats" (and they are pretty cheap at $25!) you will barely be able to tell that there are people on stage, let alone who they are. The sound is great , though

The seats in that theater are miserably small, except in the orchestra. However, Encores is a subscription. Most of them are kept in the family and handed down for generations. If you wanted a subscription now, you would get back of the balcony. The seats you would get just at the box office, well, those would be your seats. You will need binoculars.

And now for the good news......In spite of all the valid criticisms leveled against the theater (and they are indeed valid), the Encores productions are wonderful and worth putting up with the inconveniences to see them!!!

How are you getting that Drowsy Chaperone is better? Cheaper, yes. But certainly not better. I recently sat in the balcony and it is far and tight. If you can find and afford orchestra seats, do go.

I've been watching for discounts on a daily basis, wanting to add a third show to our NYC visit. Drowsy Chaperone? Gypsy? Phantom? Spelling Bee? I couldn't get my family excited about any of these.
So....I just bought $50 tickets to Mary Poppins. That is what everyone actually wanted to see. The seats aren't the best in the house, but they aren't the worst. I'd rather see a show we all really want to see from okay seats than a show we aren't excited about from great seats. I think everyone will be excited. Thanks for your help!
