North Carolina Coast

We are planning a trip down the coast of North Carolina. Planning to travel the week of labor day. 2 adults 50-60 . Not hikers or surfers just love beautiful scenery and interesting sites. Any suggestions on places to stay or eat and the sites we should not miss.
We have been to Wilmington and Bald Head Island so may skip this area on this trip.

I would assume you might be interested in seeing the Cape Hatteras lighthouse in Buxton. Also, the Wright Brothers Memorial further north may be of some interest. Be aware that the ferry between Cedar Island and Ocracoke may require advance reservations. You can make them online as I recall or use the telephone contact 1-800-BYFERRY

There is an outdoor drama about the Lost Colony of Roanoke in Manteo that may interest you. It's been a while since I've been, but I remember enjoying it when we went.

"The Lost Colony" closes before the Labor Day holiday as it does every year.

I know you said "NC", but head a bit south of Wilmington to
look around the Pawley's Island/Georgetown area. There is Brookgreen Gardens at Litchfield and the Huntington home across the road from it--Atalanta. Then Georgetown is a lovely old Revolutionary era town.
Lots of nice places to stay in Litchfield.

If I had a week, I would start at Nags Head/Kitty hawk, drive down to Hatteras, then take the ferry to Ocracoke. Reserve and take the ferry to Cedar Island. Drive over to Beaufort and spend a night or 2.

Gretchen thanks for the ideas - We have been going to Litchfield since we spent our honeymoon there 32 years ago. I was actually born in Georgetown county and still have a lot of family there. We wanted to try the NC coast because we have been all over the east coast from Maine to Key West but some how other than a trip to Bald Head Island and one to Wilmington we haven't spent any time on the NC coast. So all suggestions for NC are very welcome.
Thanks again
Debbie
