sights/sites along the SC, NC, and VA coast

Next month we will be spending the 11th-14th in Charleston, SC attending a family wedding and plan to spend the rest of the week meandering up the coast back to our home in MD. Quiet beaches and places that are laid back, and scenic are what we like - not looking for night life. Suggestions??

Georgetown for a Revolutionary War town. Pawley's Island historic district ON the beach for where the rice planters summered to escape the malarial mosquitoes. Brookgreen Gardens and Atalaya in Litchfield/Pawley's (along 17).

Oh, and drive back and see the original Litchfield Plantation house--it is a b&B but the guard may let you drive up the live oak lane to look at it up close. SO classic.

They are 75 miles above Charleston, your beginning spot, I believe, so I wanted to get you right into the sightseeing. And on the way to Georgetown, stop for lunch if it "right" at the SeeWee on highway 17 for good seafood. It is just above MT. Pleasant (that is across the river from charleston so you will know) so not far, but if you get a late start, it is FUN. It is in an old store on the west side of the highway.
Then in NC you can go to the river waterfront in Wilmington.

I would want to stop to see the Wright Brothers museum and enjoy the visit to the Outer Banks - Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, etc.

I would also want to visit Chincoteague Island in VA

November_moon had a great trip report recently

Personally, I'd plan to drive by the area (and house) used as the location in Nights in Rodanthe -

Thanks for the suggestions, Cape Hatteras and Chintoteague sound interesting as do the other ideas.

Even if you don't get over to Chincoteague, you gotta stop at Ray's Shanty for seafood. It's 1.5 miles, on the left, from the Rte 13 intersection with the road to Chincoteague.

Another vote for Chincoteague. Hope you plan on taking the Cheasapeake bridge/tunnel combo, it's expensive, but fun.

The bridge/tunnel is in our plans. We have been wanting to do that for a long time. There is some great info in these posts.

I also recommend Chincoteague!! We stayed there several times when our daughters were younger, & absolutely love it! We stayed at the Waterside Motor Inn. Rented bikes, went swimming on the beautiful beach at Assateague, saw the ponies, ate delicious seafood, played mini-golf. There's also a small theater if you want to see a movie. I want to go on this trip, too!

Other suggestions: Colonial Williamsburg; Jamestown & Yorktown; Busch Gardens if you like amusement parks.

Thanks for the input: This is the plan for now. How does it look?

4 nights in Mt. Pleasant, first night at Springhill Suites and next 3 at Plantation Oaks B&B - day trips to Charleston and environs with cousin's wedding at Pepper Plantation in-between.

Drive to Topsail Island for 2 nights. Visit Georgetown along the way. Glance at Myrtle Beach to see what all the fuss is about. Stay at Topsail Island Inn.

Drive to Washington, NC for one night. Visit New Bern along the way. Stay at Moss House B&B.

This is the long day - Drive to Cape Hatteras NP for the day, maybe a quick drive by of Bath along the way and then in the late afternoon, drive to Chincoteague. Stay at Assateague Inn one night.

Explore Chincoteague and mostly Assateague for the day, leaving for home sometime after dinner or having a late dinner on Kent Island and avoiding the Sunday traffic back-ups back into MD and DC.
