My wife and I are looking for a nice 3.5-4 star hotel around times square. Going around Easter 2010. Something a little higher end without breaking the bank...if you know what I mean...

We like the Doubletree Suites.

We have always enjoyed the Marriott Marquis....

Marriott Marquis - giant hotel but nice large rooms.

Sorry forgot to mention the Rennaissance as well. Smaller rooms but very nice.

I have stayed at the Marriott Marquis and it seems to fit the bill for you. It is a huge hotel and it is RIGHT in thick of things. It gave me hives though... too much stimulation I guess . It had nothing to do with the hotel... if you want right in it. You got it.

I have also stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn right outside of TS and I enjoyed it more. Very close to the theaters but out of the sheer madness that is in TS. But some people love that area.

Last week a friend stayed at the Millenium Broadway and thought it was just fine.

I love, love, love the Westin. The entrance is closer to 8th Ave, so you're slightly away from the madness of Times Square, bust still very close. It's my favorite hotel I've stayed at in New York.

If you spend a bit more (or ask really, really nicely at the front desk) you can get a high floor room with an amazing view -- ours was of the river and Hell's Kitchen.

It depends on how close you want to be to Times Square and what kind of hotel you want--big and glitzy (ie. Marriott Marquis), moderate and a bit less glitzy (Westin, Renaissance) or smaller and more tranquil (Casablanca). You've gotten good suggestions here and there are plenty more like

We don't know what "not breaking the bank" means to YOU and prices do fluctuate by date. Right now, the only prices you're likely to find for next Easter are "rack rates" or discounted rate that require prepayment and no cancellation, something I wouldn't do in this economy.

I second the Westin. Or the W Times Square.

I would definitely recommend the Casablanca. I stayed there last year with my teenage son because he wanted to be near Times Square. Great hotel - free upscale continental breakfast and wine and cheese reception during the week.

Very quiet. You would never know that you are steps away from Times Square.

I've stayed at the Marriott Marquis, Residence Inn Times Square, Westin Times Square, Hilton Times Square and Renaissance. The first four are upscale hotels in varying degrees of "the thick of things" -- as people have said, the Marriott Marquis is the "glitziest" with glass elevators, views of Times Square, etc. The Renaissance is much more sedate, although its above an Olive Garden Restaurant, and directly across the street from the TKTS booth and various theatres. At the Hilton we had a fabulous view of the Empire State Building. The Westin is a typical Westin. All good, but different.
