Beaches in NYC? Look at Jones Beach State Park. That's where we went as kids.

Every borough besides Manhattan has a beach. Years ago it was not uncommon to have 1 million at Coney Island on a hot July 4th. Brooklyn also has Brighton and Manhattan Beach.

Manhattan should steal the idea of Paris-Plages.

Jones Beach is in Nassau County.

"Don't be koi"

Not the first time I've been a accused of talking utter carp.

"Nassau"

You're aving a larf : There's a Nassau county in New York State?
That passed me by. I presume the beaches are the same standard as those in the real Nassau.

We've got a Coney Island, its called Blackpool. Where people go to celebrate their last hours of freedom prior to a life sentance of nagging. Blackpool is so bad it makes convinces you that marriage is the only option.

Nassau county is next to NYC boroughs on LI and the ocean beaches there are beautiful - broad, white sand beaches often with pounding surf, usually with parking areas behind the dunes (mostly state parks). They are just as gorgeous as the other nassau - only not usable for swimming all year since this is the north atlantic.

I'll just take a moment to stick up for our beautiful beaches. Places like Riis Park, Rockaway Beach and Brighton Beach have beautiful wide stretches of golden sands and (before I worried about things like skin cancer and wrinkles) I passed many happy hours on the sands of the Rockaways. (Arverne to be exact, a name that means nothing to 90% of NYC residents) I don't think that Blackpool is a very savvy comparison.

As for Jones Beach, it often ranks among the best beaches in the US in the polls magazines that run these kinds of articles.

I think most NY'er have not been to Manhattan Beach. It is separated from Brighton/Coney by some water and there is just one bus that goes there.

At the turn of the 20th Cent., there was a spur of the Long Island Railroad that went there where people like Diamond Jim Brady spent some time. There were also three racetracks in the area.

But Coney Island has always been honky tonk and that is part of its charm. (But that is changing there is an Appleby's on the main drag in Coney Island, now.)

We love The East coast.

Rally interested in the bits we haven't visited ie Long Island, NY to DC and Florida Keys.

Bit confused by Jones Beach.

Could someone confirm where the beach ends and the sea begins?

Depends on the tide.

What are you confused about?

Guess our friend does not believe that Long Island has glorious beaches. Much nicer than The Keys I think.

Come and visit sometime!

Our beaches are not exotic with palm trees. They are not associated with a week of lying around and having someone bring you a drink. There some surfing here or there but little of other water sports and our season is much shorter than a year round beach. People go to the Hamptoms for the entire escape, not just the beach.

Here, for the most part, you either drive or take a train to the beach. I went to high school three blocks from Coney Island, but few went after class. Coney Island is tough neighborhood as is a large part of the Rockaways.

It is a relief for us. My buddies wanted me to become a life guard at Coney Island, where the people on the beach were more dangerous than someone yelling for help in the water.

It is just a very different way to view a beach.

But inch for inch, don't you think Long Island's best beaches would stand up well against any other beach in the world as far as physical beauty?

IMD: I put that movie on my Netflix queue. Thanks.

BritishCaicos - "Beaches in NYC. Would those be the one near Newark airport that appeared after Sandy?"

OK. So now we know you have no idea where NYC is if you think Newark is part of it.

ekscrunchy and IMDonehere - Thanks! Coney Island is a tough neighborhood. Go to Manhattan Beach (in Brooklyn) or Brighton Beach (also in Brooklyn).

Eks

I am not a beach or resort person. Because all my grandparents lived in Brighton Beach, I spent a lot of time there and when we got older the night activities were sometimes more important than day activities. We have also only been to three or four resorts.

I have spent little time on the LI beaches as I prefer the mountains, but I do belief our beaches lack the tranquility of other beaches.

But what island has the Mermaid Parade or Nathan's?
