Hello there! My husband and I are being pushed out (by my mom who will watch our kids) for a three-four night vacation. We are wide open to possibilities. We live in South NJ and are willing to drive up to 6 hours or so, but flying or train is fine, too. We are willing to go as far north to Montreal, but would rather not go South. My husband is an (leg) amputee, but in otherwise great health. I mention this because, as much as we'd like to go hiking and be physically adventurous, it's not really that possible. We love great food, relaxation, sunshine, beautiful vistas, wine, bicycling, cool shops where I might possible find unique things with which to decorate my house, etc. We are in our late 30s, if that matters. Providence Rhode Island is about a 5 hour train ride...you could rent a car and explore the beaches of Rhode Island...Newport mansions etc

Sunshine - depends on the weather...

vistas. No prettier lake anywhere than Lake George.

Wine - no vineyards nearby but plenty of live music every night over a glass

Bicycling. Yup. From Bike trails through spa state park to 10mi loops through Saratoga battlefields overlooking the Hudson River - you name it.

Cool shops - yup. Not an antiquing town though

How about Portsmouth NH? We just did a boat trip (OLLI educational program) on the UNH research vessel from the Coast Guard Station in New Castle up the Piscataqua River to Adam's Point marine lab. Years ago we did a boat trip (inland rivers) on this same route. Beautiful plus interesting narration about history and how important the Great Bay estuary is. Portsmouth Harbor is also a good trip. Boat dock is within walking distance of parking garage.

Portsmouth has some great shops and wonderful restaurants. In addition to theater, there are events held at Prescott Park. One of our favorite drives is from the Prescott Park area out Rt 1B thru New Castle. Another nice drive is the Kittery Point area (Maine) which is just across the bridge. This is not the outlet area of Kittery. There's also a nice drive to York ME. We had fun last fall taking a cooking "class" at Stonewall Kitchens in Kittery. It's really a chef demonstration and a full meal but something different to do. Make reservations in advance. It's very popular. Flag Hill Winery in Lee NH would make a nice visit.

Should you decide t fly, fly into Manchester NH. Although Rt 101 is most direct route to Portsmouth, if you go north to Concord and then east on Rt 4, you go through Antique Alley in Northwood NH if you are looking for antiques.

These are great suggestions, thank you. I have a friend who loves Saratoga, I forgot about that. Inakauaidavidababy, he has a prosthetic and is mobile, but long walks and hikes won't work. Any other ideas are certainly welcome.
