New York City nights......

any recommendations on what to do other than broadway shows and eating at night?
might sound daft as it is the city that never sleeps but
we'd love to check out some local bars, relaxed music lounges...comedy shows...anything unusal or interesting?
are there any tours on at nighttime?

id love to hear ....
cheers

Go to Time Out New York or Village Voice on line and you can see there is an extraordianry variety of music, plays, readings, dance, films, gallery openings, etc.

I'd also add Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and City Center as lots more ideas. There are always concerts going on in the city, some even free.

There are burlesque shows, comedy clubs, jazz clubs, piano bars. bigapplejazz.com is a good site for jazz club listings but they also do a jazz tour at night. All the tour bus cos. do some sort of night tour and the cruises do evening tours, some include dinner. Bateauxnewyork.com is very good. In addition to the guides mentioned, nymag.com also has a good search engine for bars and events.

Comedy Cellar is the best comedy club in the city. Has amazing acts from Comedy Central, SNL etc. every night. The jokes aren't kid friendly... so not a family type of thing to do.

Concerts in Central Park - Summerstage and Concert in the Parks.

Outdoor movies in Bryant Park.

Midsummer's night swing (dancing) in Lincoln Center.

Shakespeare in the Park.

Unusual are those tours and search-abouts that you participate in.

Depends on when you're coming. In the summer there are a host of activities, from swing dancing - with free lessons - at Lincoln Center, to free movie nights (classics) in Bryant Park, to boat rides (the Staten Island ferry is free and the view of the city spectacular), tour boats, to hundreds of clubs, bars and restaurants with music (often jazz). the Top of the rock and Empire State Building are open until midnight, most museums are open one night per week - and if you go to the web site of New York Magazine you will find a list of hundreds of events, searchable by date and type.
