Naples to Miami - length of drive
We are holidaying in Naples from the UK (again!)and usually end up doing absolutely NOTHING for 2 weeks. However this time we thought we might drag our bones out a bit and thought maybe an overnighter in Miami might be an idea. I have done Miami Airport to Naples once - quite a few years ago - can't really remember much about it apart from that long Alligator Alley part (amazing!). So general questions from me - how long the drive, etc etc. Your thoughts please

Its 128 miles, according to google. I would assume around 2 hours, but it will be less than that as traffic moves faster than 64 miles per hour. Another option for you would be to take 41 (along the edges of the Everglades). This would allow you to stop and see the 'Glades. even do an airboat tour (on the outside of them)

I-75 is pretty boring on that route.
From the south side of Miami, the Tamiami Trail (41) isn't a lot longer unless you decide to stop at some of the interesting places along the route.
It is also cheaper, since you avoid the toll and drive 55-60 mph instead of 70-75.
I drove across 3 weeks ago, but don't know how long the actual drive took, since we stopped at a vistor's center, the Ochopee Florida Post Office (which claims to be the nation's smallest post office) and the Miccosukee casino.
Thanks for bringing your pounds to the US. We need the exchange.

Living in Naples, I've driven back and forth to Miami many, many times. I never take Alligator Alley, but much prefer Tamiami Trail (41). It usually takes me slightly less time, even though the driving is a bit slower for the most part.
I'd allow 2 hours from mid Miami to Naples on that route, plus stops. Do stop at the Ochopee post office for a minute or two, and don't miss stopping at the Clyde Butcher gallery.
Incidentally, last Saturday we drove Alligator Alley to Ft. Lauderdale and were surprised that a rather long stretch is now posted as 55 mph and being patrolled for speeders by the Micosukee police. They had stopped two that we saw. Seemed like a speed trap to me as there is no reason for it and no construction.

As ever, this is the place to get solid advice. Looks like it's a 'go-er' then, if I can drag them out of their beds or the pool (!). Probably will try Tamiami but will have to watch our speed as 70mph is pretty much standard over here on any distance routes, even on our congested roads!
What do you suggest as a day trip to get a flavour of Miami? Stroll along South Beach and...?

Oh and Patrick, so pleased to see you still out there!
I consulted you as the Naples oracle about 3 years back before our last visit. You are obviously a great advert for the place - this is our third trip back there!

Another idea for getting out of Naples is the boat to Key West. We haven't done it, but it looks nice. It is a four hour ride there and a four hour ride back, but then you get to spend the day in Key West.
If you are headed to South Beach, I do recommend spending one night. Walking down Ocean Blvd. at night is almost like a parade. You won't believe the outfits and cars. It is just great people watching.
And a few years ago we ate at Emeril's restaurant. We've been to a few of his, but this one was the best. It was amazing. They might still be doing the Sunday brunch which would be a nice option.

Is this the Key West Express you are talking about? Leaving from Ft Myers 8.30 each morning. I was having a little browse through previous posts about it - mixed reviews. The issue of getting stranded there by inclement weather seems highlighted

oh I would most definitely agree
Perhaps I should start a new thread.. where's the worst place you've ever been standed?!!! My vote would go to the train station in the city nearest to us (Norwich) - at half ten on a Saturday night when the public loos have been locked and you're trying to get the last train home after an evening in the pub with friends!! (note: NO mention of Key West there AT ALL !!!)
