MOUNT HOPE CEMETARY, WESTCHESTER, NY

We are in Manhattan this weekend,(4-27 through 4-30-06) staying at hotel across from Carnegie Hall. We're interested in getting to Mount Hope Cemetary, in Westchester (or Westchester County?) New York. Is there a subway connection? Will we have to rent a car? Looking on yahoo maps, it says approx 18-22 mile (although we have never driven, so, will it be confusing, difficult to find?) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank-you

When I googled it, I came up with a Mount Hope Cemetary in Hastings-on-Hudson. Is that the one you mean?

If so, here are driving directions:

You may also be able to take the Metro-North train out of Grand Central to Hastings-on-Hudson and then take a taxi from the station.

There is no subway there.

yes, that's the same thing I found when I Googled it (I'm doing this search for a friend), so, I hope that is the same cemetary she meant. Thanks, I will forward to her.

Westchester is a county and as lisettemac says, that cemetery appears to be in Hastings on Hudson, a beautiful area north of Manhattan. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywestch/towns/hastings.htm

Here's their website with info on getting there

You can go by train. If you don't mind driving, it's a lovely area and would give you an opportunity to perhaps stop elsewhere.

thanks everyone, I wouldn't mind getting out of the city (although we're only in NYC 4 days), lisettemac, & mclaurie, Mara, would traffic be horiffic if we tried driving it on Friday, 4/28/06, if we left our hotel at 11am or so? We have a Broadway play at 8pm Friday night, would we run in to a lot of traffic coming back in to city (or does everyone head out on Friday?) Or, would Saturday be better?

You'll encounter less traffic on Saturday. I might suggest you couple the visit to the cemetery with a tour or Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate, which is about 10 miles north and a very easy drive along Route 9 north from Hastings.

Question, is this Jewish cemetary as mentioned in the direction? If so, the majority of them are NOT open to the public on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. You should call the cemetary and ask for public hours. Would hate for you to schlep all the way there only to find it closed.

Website says it's open everyday except major holidays. Staff available M-Sat 9-4
http://www.mounthopecemetery.com/visit_us.html

I think Fri or Sat. would be ok as long as you avoid rush hour. Might be better on Sat. if you have no evening plans in case you get engrossed. The Saw Mill is a very twisty winding road. Just be careful. The idea of Kykuit is wonderful.

Stone Barns is a good idea, but you'll never get reservations at this late date.
