Since it seems that every area of Maui is spectacular, and every website depicts a magnificent resort, the only basis left to choose a location is the potential for good weather (mid-October).

I am trying to decide between The Hyatt Regency Maui, and the The Westin Maui in Lahaina, or an equivalent 4 star resort in Wailea.

I would like to be a reasonable driving distance from interesting sites, rather than stay in a secluded area, which may, I believe, be the case for the Maui Prince. I will only have a few days on the island, and don't want to take up too much time driving to various destinations.

Maui Prince is only a few min. past the other hotels in Wailea, and is on the nicest beach. Hyatt in Kaanapali is more "connected" to the ocean than the Westin.

I would ditto Maui Prince.

We stayed there for the first time a couple months ago. It is farthest out of the hotels in the area (technically, it's not considered Wailea, it's considered Makena), but it was no more than 3-5 minutes more in drive time and definitely more affordable than the other Wailea properties (except for the Renaissance, I think that one is comparable. You can check their websites).

The Prince however is an "older" hotel, so keep that in mind. We liked it though.

One word about the Hyatt in Kaanapali. The bathroom/vanity area is poorly designed IMO. The toilet and shower is in a small seperate room, but the vanity area is NOT enclosed. So in the morning, if one person is getting ready and using a hair dryer, the other had either better be a sound sleeper or already up and about.

Also, in one of the rooms we stayed in (it was in the atrium tower), there was an unusally large space between the front door and the floor. As a result, when people walked by outside, you could really hear it. I also ended up putting a towel across it to block out the light that came through at night (I like my room dark).

I'm a finicky traveler, so these things might only bother me!

My husband & I are planning a trip to Maui next year. Have you looked into smaller lodgings? We are thinking of the Ho'olio House (hooliohouse.com) south of Lahaina or the Aloha Pualani in N. Kihei.
