martha's vineyard
My husband and I are spending a few days at Martha's Vineyard May 19th and 20th and would like to know the best restaurants on the island. We'll be moving around the island as we like to "explore". Have read that The Beach Plum Inn is wonderful w/ fantastic views. Where do the locals go? Looking for both romantic and casual places.. I read that we may need to make reservations a few weeks in advance for many places.

I visited MV last year & arrived at Oaks Bluff hoping for an early lunch. Every place had at least 1 hour wait before you could get a table. This year we will get a good breakfast at Betsys diner in Falmouth, get the ferry & once off it head for Edgartown where there were less crowds & less rush at the restaurants. I would get a few good options rather than waste hours waiting for the one place to seat you.
For us we will just look around enjoying the sights until we come across somewhere to eat & if that happens to be one of the recommended places by the locals, so much the better. There are plenty there & while you amble you might be able to sample homemade lemonade off some enterprising children.

my reviews are a few years old... but I really liked Atria.
The Beach Plum is a nice place, but there weren't great views from the dining room, and I thought the food was kind of pedestrian. In the summer when they do the steel drum buffet outdoors, its really nice.
Its a tourist trap, I know, but I really like the Black Dog as a lunch place...if the wait isn't too long and you are there. I think their food is quite good.

Unfortunately most people on this forum have much more travel experience than I so its rare for me to actually be able to offer someone pertinent information-MV happens to be one of the like five places with which Im familiar, hah!
